William worked from June to October 2010 as part of the Vessels of Opportunity program that paid the fishermen BP put out of business to use their boats to clean up its oil. William transported giant bags, called bladders, used to collect oil, to the shore. When he came home at night, says Nicole, his clothes “smelled oily.” Not only were his clothes blackened; so was William.
William’s symptoms began with coughing, then headaches and skin rashes, followed by vomiting and diarrhea. About three to six months later, he started bleeding from his ears and nose and suffering from a heavy cough.
“I ain’t got no money for a doctor,” William quietly tells me, staring down at his hands in his lap. Medicaid covers the kids, but Nicole and William do not have health insurance. “We didn’t know we were gonna get sick. Now I get sick, I stay sick. I don’t sleep. I stay stressed out more than anything. I got bags under my eyes I never had before. I just don’t know if I wanna show people who I am.”
Special Investigation: Two Years After the BP Spill, A Hidden Health Crisis Festers
William and Nicole Maurer, and their two young daughters, are among the hundreds of thousands of Gulf residents suffering from the hidden health crisis festering in the region as a result of the toxic “gumbo of chemicals” to which the people, places and wildlife of the Gulf continue to be exposed. From respiratory ailments to neurological disorders to what’s being called the “BP rash” and more, coastal residents have experienced devastating health effects while BP still hasn’t been held to account. Antonia Juhasz reports on the little-known crisis at length in a special investigation for The Nation.
Don't know how I found this, but I discovered a forum that reports on newly proposed/approved City development projects (e.g. skyscrapers). In particular architecture / Civ peeps should be interested.
MIT students create T(ether) -> the 4th dimension?
The video speaks for itself, so I'll just quote Engadget.
The tablet-based technology uses motion capture cameras to track users' heads and the orientation of the device itself, building a 1:1 spatial connection between real and virtual coordinates and allowing "intuitive interaction with volumetric data." As you'll see in the clip after the break, this equates to some pretty neat tricks. And, if you throw in multiple users wearing motion-tracked gloves, things get even more Eastside.
So Lytro announced its focus free camera yesterday with pricing and has opened up orders (Lytro is now taking orders for its camera, which comes in an 8GB version for $399 or a 1GB version for $499). The selling point is that you can take a photo and focus into specific areas you want later : http://www.lytro.com/living-pictures/282
Whether the 2MP limit to the resulting photos is relevant or not, in my opinion, is a moot point, because theoretically, as the founder Ren Ng, has mentioned, one can just throw in higher MP sensors in the future.
My main interest is in this technology's application in the world of surveillance and recon. Remember when you were a kid and saw those movies where people could magically extract information out of a blurry photo? With Lytro, that kind of stuff has become reality ! For soldiers gathering information, they no longer need to focus, just aim and click; worry about focusing later.
Definitely cool stuff.

Today, I learned that I was using a QNX operating system long before the Blackberry Playbook came out. It was in the form of the ICON computer, which I believe was in the computer lab of many schools in Ontario, Canada circa the early 1990s.
Thats right, I was using QNX when I was 7 years old.
One of first widespread uses of the QNX real-time OS (RTOS) was in the non-embedded world, when it was selected as the operating system for the Ontario education system's own computer design, the Unisys ICON.
