working on my harrow
it's Pal's "i can't bear the thought of using you" vs Cam's "Totally Ok With Being Used. Extremely Fine With It. Willing, Even." gigant forehead tatoo.
meanwhile Harrow holds a huge sign saying "i don't want to eat another soul can i please not have another soul on my conscience i already ate you alive i don't want to do it again" and Gideon wears a tshirt with "EAT ME. eatmeeatmeeatmeeatme" printed on it. they're both blindfolded.
That's as many as ten thousand million~ 😌✨
"I understand you didn't ask on purpose, but I like to think that there was a grain in your soul that saw yourself in need, and perhaps thought to itself, I wish I had Abigail Pent."

I love Abigail, Muir truly never wastes a side character. The gathering at ALA was a delight, everyone looked so beautiful!

i present to you a collection of posts that are not about the locked tomb series but that i think absolutely could be

The John chapters of Nona are endlessly captivating to me because. Of John's story. He was already living a post-apocalypse even before the climate disaster peaked. His culture and his language taken from him before he was born by people whose descendants taught him to thank them for the opportunity to learn theirs. And he trusted them! And he learned!! And he was angry!! Of course he was angry! Who could have blamed him if he had been born angry? His rage was justified! He was right! The people who destroyed his world would escape consequences—again! And live on at the expense of the suffering of everyone they crushed along the way—again!
Who can say it would be unjustified, if the grief and rage of indigenous people, stolen from and exploited and denied justice, finally broke like a wave upon the world.
But then who can say what would be built out of the ashes of a world destroyed by grief and rage. And who can say if that world is better, or worse, or if history keeps building layer after layer of the same human sediment.
#he is. a thesis of not being able to destroy the master's house using the master's tools#he learned everything he knows from the people who systematically destroyed his people#that's the point#he destroyed them and then had nothing left but what they taught him#and the fear and the rage and the hatred born of what was done to him#his anger at being dismissed professionally seems outsized? perhaps it's the deferred anger of centuries of generational trauma#maybe it's the grief for people he should have known and the community he should have had#maybe it came from the tension of walking through a park and knowing about the marae burned there on the alter of property values#grief is love with nowhere left to land#and rage is grief with nowhere else to go#I will never be able to hate John#not even after he'd become what he hated#not even when there's another child in front of us who has also lost his culture and his family because of John#and who also comforts himself by playing with dolls and bartering snacks with other similarly effected children#because if I grieve for Kevin then I can also grieve for John#and honestly. Kevin is not real. Kevin's grief is fake#John is of course also not real. and therefore John's grief is also fake#but John's grief is much more real than anything else that world has to offer#and the grief of the people who relate to John. who have the sorrow and the rage inside them that could break the world if it had the power#that's real
It's endlessly funny to me, that so many people read Nona the Ninth - a book where a group of indigenous people from a small nation in the southern hemisphere spend years trying to build a communal plan, begging anyone to take collective action, reaching out again and again for as many people to get on board as possible, only to be stymied again and again by the individually and structurally powerful, who simply didn't care (and couldn't care due to the incentive structures imposed by power) and just wanted to preserve their own power/lives at the expense of everyone else, only for one of their number to be singled out and given immense universe-altering power by a magical entity, which of course led to disaster and the collapse of their original goals because, you know, absolute power corrupts absolutely and will magnify even the most minor human foibles - and came away thinking ah yes, the point is that John as an individual is ontologically evil.
#i think people also forget john is arguably the most fucked up dude in human history and an unreliable narrator #he probably. can’t connect with who he used to be before necromancy #John The Guy and jod are different guys entirely #the regular scale of trauma does a lot to a normal human brain #john went through arguably the worst trauma a human person could possible experience #while being transformed into a godlike being #they’re not the same person #the same way mercymorn ‘we will not stand for reproductive abuse’ becomes ‘infants as fingers and gestures’ (via @monetarymollusk)
i don't get how you can read the end of john's story and not see someone undergoing a complete mental shattering it's not an excuse it's an explanation of why he did what he did if you had ultimate god powers dropped upon you from a great height then saw everyone you cared about hunted down and murdered in front of your eyes whilst the very people who made living on earth miserable and squeezed every drop of profit from it before abandoning everyone to die escaped in front of your eyes are you saying you could've kept your head in that moment? ( via @2impostors )
#john's backstory is SO important to me because it makes so much sense every step of the way#he lost the plot but like. every moment he went down that path.... i could see it.#that rage. that senseless thirst for meaningless revenge#and once he literally becomes god.. why hold himself to human standards of right and wrong? why care for single individuals at all?#and all of this tragedy is 100x better BECAUSE of the good intentions paving the way to hell#how do you look at john gaius 'no one knowingly left behind' 'begged for funds to reduce chance of damage'#'spents weeks trying to handle maternity issue bc people deserve a choice on whether to terminate their pregnancy'#beloved of alecto. she gave the world john because she loved the world!#how do you look at THAT guy and think he was irredemable from the start (via liesmyth)
Added more details
It's interesting to see conversations about Harrowhark and gender, because she definitely does not fit into our traditional gender binary, but on the Ninth she conforms to the norms. She's a bald, grumpy nun like everybody else.
Necro/Cav relationships have more bearing on Dominicus society than gender relations (as seen by Harrow's conversation with Abigail and Magnus) and that coupled with the fact that there is a very complicated Dominicus social system Muir did not explain; being a necro, a cav or a normal citizen is basically akin to a secondary gender.
So in this post we discuss how John Gaius invented alpha beta omega dynamics....

underrated locked tomb detail is how so much emphasis is put on the difference between flimsy and real paper and yet it doesn't have to be explained exactly what that difference is because we know. we know okay we know what the nine houses would use instead of trees for cheap mass-produced printing material. it doesn't even have to be stated that gideon's skin mags are printed on actual human skin we know-
despite that Coronabeth Tridentarius is frequently called the most beautiful out of all tlt characters, it's Camilla Hect who is flirted with the most. multiple characters find her attractive, and Nona, who is literally planet earth (therefore has universal taste) called Corona almost pretty enough for Camilla, which strongly suggests that Camilla Hect is the hottest tlt character. in this essay i will-
