I am alive on Mastadon.

For those who have not heard of this open source social media, it is a federation of servers focused in  different spheres.  From your home server you can see the whole federation.    A general community site is https://mastodon.social/ .  To learn more visit:  https://joinmastodon.org/ .

My choice of community was https://bear.community/.  I’m now @[email protected] .   This community server has existed for just a couple days and I was #23 to join this server.   It’s the small friendly bear town in the hills.  There are a number of apps iPhone and Android.  I’m using an iphone app called tootdon.   Free and seems fine.  

So far it’s nice here.  No ads, no filtered searches, no promoted fake posts, no bots, and some simple rules like tag your porn as sensitive content.  There are still a few rough corners in the interface, but it’s dry and warm. Reminds me of here when I joined in May of 2007.     

I’ve seen a flood of familiar ex Tumblr’s showing up.  The lifeboat has arrived.   See you all on the other side.

I feel like a nurturing friend has turned into a judgemental monstrous bigot. I’ve watched as the encroaching filters on Tumblr searches reached the craziness of self righteously returning zero hits for searches of human anatomy, because the human body is always pornographic but where hate blogs seem to almost be promoted by their search algorithm.

I adopted a live and let live approach, flagging and reporting the rare occasional illegal post, and allowed dissenting ideas and interests to be respected.

I have always been a digital gypsy moving from platform to platform looking for an online place to grow and share. Compuserve to GEnie to ICQ to Yahoo! to MySpace to tumblr in 2008. Always looking for an adult community and a fertile place to discover the unanticipated and the challenging. I never found that in Facebook or its ilk of social media.

There is nothing creepier then being one of the last people still on a dying platform, as the people who made it a vibrant and interesting place to be one by one gather their content and hit the electronic road, and slowly the life goes out of a once special place. I lingered far to long before.

I will be wrapping up my Tumblr era after 20 years, and heading down the road. Sanctimonious hypocrisy, Censorship and corporate stupidity doesn’t reach everywhere yet. Somewhere there will be a light on for the porn hungry and the fringe communities that need a home.

I loved Tumblr because it wasn’t an echo box reflecting back what I already liked, but a kaleidoscope of the unexpected. I have met some amazing people and loved the weird, the beautiful, and the erotic posts that they have shared. Thank you all. See you in the next haven.
