So I have been reading a few posts that say that David Thewlis and Gary Oldman were not good enough to play Remus Lupin and Sirius Black. And I am like…
I kinda might have taken it personally, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But honestly, they are two of the best actors Britain has to offer. David Thewlis is completely underrated, like it’s not even funny. I know because I have seen him in films OTHER than Potter. But I think that they were the perfect for Remus and Sirius, and I am not only saying this because both are my favorite actors.
Here is why they were perfect for Remus and Sirius…
Before he came to Hogwarts, Remus was jobless and pretty much homeless. He had a hard time keeping himself stable, so yeah, I can’t picture him as someone with a whole lot of muscle. He is more like lanky, and tall (accruing to JKR), which is David Thewlis' look. Which was perfect.
And lets not forget the fact that he was a bloody werewolf. If you expect a werewolf, who has to go through a painful and harsh transformation every month of the year, to be muscular and perfect, please go watch Twilight. All of that pain is going to leave some marks. The fact that Lupin looked weak and tired was accurate.
He was lonely and, shunned by society. He didn’t really have friends other than The Marauder’s which, when Remus came to Hogwarts in Prisoner of Azkaban, were all believed to be dead or in the dreadful wizard prison. Then he was forced to resign from the one steady job that he had after so long.
In the Order of the Phoenix, he had his best friend back after 13 years. That was good, but then he also had work to do for the Order of the Phoenix, and because of all the half breed issues with the Ministry of Magic, there was more and more pressure on him to hide out. And at then end he lost Sirius, and he couldn’t do anything to save him. And in that moment he realized that he would never be able to have his real best friends back, and he was back into that depression sort of state in Half Blood Prince.
On top of all of that, Dumbledore died. The man who had supported him from the beginning. Who had let him into Hogwarts given his ‘condition’. Who was the reason he ever had friends. Who was the reason he was what he was. All of that pain on one man’s shoulder is going to make him weaker. And I feel like Thewlis’ Lupin perfectly portrayed that.
During the Deathly Hallows, he was convinced he was going to be the reason an innocent child was going to suffer the same consequences he suffered. He left home because he didn’t want to put Tonks and their child in danger. Obviously he was concerned for both of them.
And lets not forget he was a werewolf.
David Thewlis’ Lupin made him a bit more real, and gave it more depth, which is over looked and underrated. He wasn’t like the dreamy good guy werewolf, because he has so much more history to him than just a werewolf in his 30’s. Since he is a well liked character, obviously there are going to be deferring opinions about his casting. But to me David Thewlis will always be the perfect Remus Lupin.
Gary Oldman, was brilliant in all the three Potter films, as Sirius Back. Because like Thewlis, Sirius was someone you could make out as being a man who suffered greatly. Which was true.
Sirius had been falsely accused of murdering James and Lily Potter. And he was accused because of one of his best friends who turned out to be a complete coward. Remus who believed that accusation was also parted from Sirius, who was left with all of the wizarding world thinking he was a crazy mass murderer.
It led to him suffering 13 years in Azkaban, with dementors who suck out your soul by the way. Why is he expected to look like a young man with no battle scars, and a few wrinkles on his face, I dont know.
Both Oldman and Thewlis made their characters look like they were supposed to, given that they are both exceptionally good looking for their age.
