September's heading midway and fall winds are picking up, so we figured it's about time to go through some sparks from August. 

A few major events had a B flag flying over during last month. Restaurant day was a definite success as our two-vessel convoy docked near Kaivopuisto and served intrigued passers-by and invitees plates from the archipelago. Sounds were yet again provided by Uploud Audio! Thanks guys! Check out the pics.

Beaufort magazine was also invited to the HSS 120-year festivities at the end of the month. A classy party hosted at prestigious surroundings; Matias and Michael represented the B team and managed to snap a few photos to share (Thanks Mike!).

Despite the grey weather at first everyone was really having a good time after the race. The B Team was hanging out on the dock having a chat with sailors and sailing enthusiasts. Viaporin Tuoppi is something you can't miss! Congrats to winning teams and everyone who felt like a winner after (or already before) a few Suomenlinnan Panimo pints!

We've been streaming back and forth on the coast spreading some Beaufort love to newcomers and old friends. You might've run into the two curly haired brothers or a brown haired weirdo with a beard-o carrying a bunch of sweet blue prints. And on top of that our friends have given well needed aid in getting the word out, thanks for that! 

Summer season is somewhat midway and we're around for some anticipated events until the end of August. Next up you'll have the chance to meet our crew, purchase the mag and have a talk at Café Carusel in the Merisatama area near downtown Helsinki. We're around tomorrow, Wednesday the 24th of July from noon until late. After 18.00 (6pm), a local DJ will host the evening playing sweet tunes before the night's official event, Hip-hop night, makes way at 20.00 (8pm). Looking forward to some old school beats! 

Later in the beginning of August, we're tearing up the place during Classic Week, as the Baltic Classic Circuit arrives to Suomenlinna. More info coming up... Be sure to stay tuned as we inform on coming events!

July heading over

Beaufort no. 2 arrived fresh from the press last week! This summer you can find Beaufort magazine from various stores and restaurants in the downtown Helsinki area, be sure to get yourself one! 

This weekend is busy sailing-wise as the Helsinki regatta hosts races for numerous classes from dinghies to classic 8mRs... After yesterday our editor-in-chief Matias with his skipper Pyry held tight position within the top 5, racing for victory in the 470 class Finnish Nationals. We'll see final standings after today. Good luck gents!

A slice of history set fire in Helsinki

In 1900 a prominent, new boathouse was built on Liuskaluoto (Skifferholmen) island. The shed, known as Itävaja (Östra skjulet) was the heart of the HSS yacht club up until 2013. 

Few days ago on the 11th of June the building set ablaze for still unknown reasons. Despite club members' struggles to fight the fire, the heat grew intolerable and in seconds, through a supposed explosion, all hell broke loose. 

This was not the first time flames raged on the island. During the last century fire has damaged buildings on three separate occasions. Luckily, last tuesday all the yachts were already in the water. Nevertheless, equipment, sails and masts of irreplaceable classics were torched to dust. 

Yet we know that like the phoenix the club will rise from ashes and regain new heart. Bon courage HSS!

And we're on our way!

Matias and co went for an all-nighter last night to put the printing engines on. Proudly we can now say that Beaufort no. 2 will officially be out next week! Prepare for some Beaufort breeze! We're about to puff hard! Allez Beaufort!

 The 470 class European Championships in Formia kicked off yesterday with 110 teams represented from 35 countries. Weather conditions should continue with sun and good breeze. Click on the link to follow up on what's going on during race week!

The Helsinki Bay is now cleared from ice and the streets flourish in sunlight. Last winter was harsh, but in the midst of all that cold we decided to shed some light for the season ahead. This Äly / Three Lines production is the first chapter of a series of shorties. Big ups to Helmeri Heikkilä, Anton Thompson-Coon, Janne Vartia and Perttu Kurttila! Chikidy-check-it-out!

A truly sad day in sailing. The Artemis America's cup catamaran capsized during training leading to the tragic death of Andrew Simpson. Our heartfelt condolences to family and friends.

Join the crowd when at bay, and feel the vibe at events such as the The Baltic Classic Circuit; this year arriving to 5 locations around the Baltic, from Stockholm to Saint Petersburg. 

The entire circuit narrows down in August to the coast of downtown Helsinki, around the sea fortress of Suomenlinna: The Viapori Cup, with over 200 yachts in over 20 different classes, is single-handedly the largest classic yachting event in Scandinavia. Whether you are traveling around the Nordic or just searching for a berth to have fun in, be sure to hang out at port when Classic Week is on. Have a word with a youthful yachtsman or a sassy sailorette, for all I know, they might steer you somewhere new.

Blue Marlin

There isn't a single 12mR classic beauty sailing Finnish seas. The international 12 mR class is the indeed bigger sibling of the more commonly seen 6 and 8 mR yachts. 

A thorough restoration is underway in the historic port city of Kotka, Finland, in order to launch a pearl of maritime tradition in the Baltic. Designed by the British naval architect Charles E. Nicholson, this 12 mR yacht, originally named Hurricane, was finished in 1936. Two years later Sir Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith, an America's Cup helmsman, painted the the hull blue and renamed it Blue Marlin. A project, now finishing up, has demanded time and heart for the past 4 years. Blue Marlin, now ready for furnishing and bronze fitting, is expected to set sail this coming summer.

Professional beauty: Skillful sailing

Historically sailing has been considered very masculine; a notch on the belt of a man to prove his place. However, women have paved their way to reach the top everywhere in the maritime industry, including professional sailing. Both Laura Dekker (NL) and Jessica Watson (AUS) slapped boys prior to them to circumnavigate single-handedly and underaged. Finland experienced a shift as Silja Lehtinen with her crew (Match Race) and Tuuli Petäjä (RS:X) became the representatives of professional Finnish sailing with Olympic medals and significant media coverage. 

A story, yet untold, of the 21st century:

An old man sitting by the bay, eagerly instructing his grandson on matters most important in life. "Son, to feel what I have felt, you should let those sails catch wind... Go sailing, my boy." The young boy with sincere amaze, gazed straight into the eyes of a graying man and said: "But Papa, sailing is for girls!" 

Sailing truly is beautiful.

April Maze: Some serious sailing, Palma de Mallorca

The Sailing World Cup kicked off last week in the Mediterranean with some of the best sailors in the world competing in a vast variety of conditions; everything between rough breeze and dead flat. The sailors have shown themselves as true athletes, ruff 'n' tuff. 

2013 will prove to be an interesting year in professional sailing as most of the top dogs are still licking their wounds after the battles in the London Olympics. The young guns will eagerly show their potential during this Olympiad, eventually ending in Rio 2016.

Undoubtedly, every professional sailor has a long, rocky road to Rio; to sail and to gain success, sacrifices will be made. The Palma regatta, yet again, marks the beginning of a new era. Good luck, gentlemen!
