I'm currently 19 and in college and I can't draw for shit. 😁

→ What’s a Bang again?
A Bang is a type of fan challenge in which writers and artists work together to produce new collaborative content for the fandom.
In a normal bang, the writers sign up first and submit a maximum of 250 words - an excerpt and/or a summary - and the artists claim the excerpt/summary they want to create for, based on the info provided by the writers. (The writers will be anonymous for artists during claiming period).
The theme for this years Bang is Angst/Whump, which is completely OPTIONAL.

What animal is associated with them? What animal have they always wanted as a pet? Are there any animal motifs associated with them? As in, you use specific words for them, like "perch", "ruffled their feathers (metaphorically)", "chirps." Those would be for a bird motif.
Shoot off of this one, bonus: Pets
Have they had any pets in the past? How many? How did they die? Are they a good pet owner? Do they have any currently?
✧ Being poor is expensive. You can't buy in bulk to save money. You pay fees for not having enough in your account. You buy cheap shoes that wear out fast instead of good ones that last.
✧ The math is constant. Every purchase is a calculation. Can I afford this? What can I skip? Is this worth it? Your character's always doing mental accounting.
✧ You get creative. Meals from whatever's left in the pantry. Fixing things with duct tape and hope. Making do because you have to.
✧ Shame is real. Your character might lie about why they can't go out. Make excuses. Hide their situation because poverty is treated like a moral failure.
✧ Small luxuries feel huge. A coffee from an actual coffee shop instead of gas station. Buying name-brand something. These aren't nothing, they're big deals.
✧ You're always tired. Working multiple jobs, irregular hours, the stress of never having enough, it's exhausting. Your character's running on empty.
✧ Future planning is hard. When you're worried about making rent, thinking about retirement or savings feels impossible. You're in survival mode.
✧ Other people don't get it. Friends who casually suggest expensive activities. People who think you're bad with money when really there's just not enough of it.
✧ The system works against you. Need an ID to get a job but need money to get an ID. Need an address to get assistance but you're homeless. Catch-22s everywhere.
✧ IT'S NOT A CHARACTER FLAW. Your character isn't poor because they're lazy or stupid. Circumstances, bad luck, systemic issues, poverty is complex and it's not about moral worth.

So I was given encouragement to yap so here is my yapping:
Chuuya uses anger to mask his emotions.
When people think about hiding or covering feelings, they think about people like Dazai: emotions are either buried beneath a blank exterior or are hidden behind silly smiles and goofy actions. But feelings can be hidden behind any kind of emotion.
And this is what Chuuya does—its just that his emotions of choice is anger. It's likely something he can rely on, its something people expect of him as someone strong (and therefore seeing him as incapable of "weaker" emotions), and most importantly it works. If someone is angry, you arent going to ask them how they feel because theyre showing you, right? You arent going to want to press for information or push your luck because what if they go off? They're already angry, you dont want to make them violent too.
We actually see a moment that explicitly shows Chuuya using anger to hide vulnerability; in Stormbringer when the Flags give Chuuya his gift, he turns away from them, yelling at them before storming out of the building, only to come back inside a moment later, more calm. He used his anger as a distraction, throwing it out to try and cover how he really felt, then removed himself from the situation long enough to get a handle on his emotions before coming right back.
I think this is why his default is anger. It's not that hes actually mad all the time, its just an easy way to distract people and keep them from knowing what he really feels.
This is further supported in the times he DOESNT get angry: when we see him dealing with the ADA to deliver the information for Mori during the three-way conflict, he's calm the entire time. Even when Yosano knows who he is and he grumbles about Dazai, he doesnt get angry, just annoyed. He has nothing to hide here. He's just here to do his job, he has no stakes in this game.
Versus during the cannibalism arc, when Ranpo brings up Dazai Chuuya DOES get angry because he is already high-strung with emotions and stress and burying those feelings in anger is easy when hes given a target and an excuse to be upset. If hes angry at what Ranpo said about Dazai, then you wont notice him panicking and worrying.
Alternatively, any time hes with Dazai he gets angry really easily. Dazai can read him though, and the anger seems more like a revert to old habits to hide emotions because of this. And Dazai enjoys making him angry—enjoys making him feel and making him show it.
Anyway. It's 9pm, I'm sleepy, and I typed all of this on my phone because I couldn't be assed to pull out my computer so double-checking clairty is not in the cards, but I hope this is clear enough and makes enough sense. As you can see, I think about this. Often. I could go on but aforementioned I'm Sleepy means I will end it here and go to bed now. 500 words later.
