You ask if that counted as an offering of combat.
“Did it... Ah!”
“Hm! An unorthodox strategy, but I suppose it did! Well played, Honeymaker!”
You don’t know where you-
Oh, right
You know what you must do.
This beetle wants to fight you.
You consider your options.
You venture a clarification. The uh, one you’re both standing on?
He gives a sagely nod.
“Ah, I see. I understand your confusion, Honeymaker.”
“But! This is no bridge!”
“This!”
“Is my arena!”
“I’m in training you see. We Beetles are quite territorial, and if I am to stake a claim to territory of my own, I must be strong! Stronger than I am currently! And what better way to test my strength than to face the wanderers of this land in the ultimate affair of honor?”
“I see the martial arts are not unknown to you either, Honeymaker. The transaction I offer is simple: If you wish to cross, I will gladly grant you the passage you seek. All I ask in return is an offering of combat.”
He straightens.
“So, what say you, Honeymaker Bumbles? Will you indulge me in my pas d’armes?”
You decide it’s time to cut to the chase. You tell him that you're here to cross the bridge.
Bosko makes a show of looking around.
“...Bridge?”
But anyway, how come he was just sleeping out in the open like that?
He laughs sheepishly.
“Aheh, yes, well, you take your moments of rest when you can get them, no? And I can’t very well leave my post unattended!”
You don’t want to be rude, so you accept the Beetle’s handshake. His grip is crushing.
“An interesting name for a Honeybee, I might add!”
Yeah, it’s a long story
Diplomacy seems like a good start. You attempt to greet him again, and tell him that your name is Bumbles. Well, it’s Aleah, but everyone calls you Bumbles.
“Oh! Introductions, of course! Forgive my rudeness, I must still be groggy from my nap!”
“Well met, Honeymaker Bumbles. My name is Bosko”
“Hmm! A new face!”
“Capital! What ho, Honeymaker! To what do I owe the pleasure?”

You valiantly resist your base instincts as you consider your approach.
You decide to stay out of arm’s reach in your attempt to rouse the Beetle.

Looks like the coast wasn’t as clear as you thought. Sitting cross legged right in the middle of the bridge is a Beetle, effectively blocking your path.
You don’t know what their deal is, but you’re really starting to wish your wings worked properly.
You tentatively call out and greet the figure, hoping that they’re in a good mood.
You receive no reply. You guess this guy has a penchant for the ominous.
You stay on your toes just in case, paying particular attention to the sky above you as you move onward.
Well, you remember hearing that webs are only sticky if the spider who made them wants them to be, and the floor of this thing is paved with planks anyway, so you should still be good as long as you don’t touch the sides. Besides, you’re pretty sure that spiders are known for the subtlety of their traps. This seems like it would be a little conspicuous, right?
You try announcing your presence as you look around and above you for any sign of a bridgekeeper.
...Doesn’t seem like anyone’s home.
Figuring it’s a better idea than drenching yourself for the third time today, you decide to investigate the structure downstream. As you cautiously draw closer, your suspicions are proved correct as you recognise a typical Spider suspension bridge design.
Two wooden frames on either side of the river are joined by a silk hammock anchored to the surrounding trees and floored with a deck of wooden planks.
Given your usual ability of flight, you’ve never had much need to use bridges like this before, but you take solace in the fact that Spider engineering is known to be remarkably sturdy, despite appearances.
You lower your spear in what you hope is a non-threatening way.
