How to bring yourself to work when you literally cannot stop procrastinating:
1. Make a conscience decision of the last message you will reply to on your phone, then go offline and stop replying.
2. Put on noise cancelling headphones and play Flight of the Silverbird (my ultimate motivation song).
3. Make a coffee, get a snack, return to your study space and lock door (metaphorically or literally).
4. Close all irrelevant tabs on iPad/laptop/whatever device you use.
5. Work.

Today Iām studying grammar, I actually have a test this afternoon. Iām never really confident when it comes to grammar because after 3 years of uni Iām still as bad as I was when I started studying it... Anyway, Iāll just do my best!
Also, the plant in the bright pink pot is going to be leaving my little jungle very soon! Iāve been growing it for my best friend and sheās coming next week.

Remember when you were a kid and you effortlessly made art and built stuff and decorated your room, without ever thinking that a professional could do that better, that you ought to leave it to someone more competent, that maybe you should buy a finished product instead, that the end result might look shitty so youād better not even get started? I think iām slowly but surely re-awakening that kid in me. Repair. Reuse. Create.

How to rise early and raise productivity
My favorite time of the day is between 4 am and 7 am. The world is asleep, the sun hasnāt risen and I totally feel at ease. I never used to sleep in late, but I also never considered myself an āearly riserā. In times of depression and elsewhat, I transitioned into a night owl and got to bed at usually 3 a.m in the morning (and I loved it). When I decided to change something, I also tried to wake up earlier than usual. And now, more than one year later, I wake up (nearly) every day at 6 am. I am still in love with nightfall and the moon, but I learnt that my quality in life just got better by learning how to be productive.
I donāt want to convince you with āI made it and so can youā because if you donāt want to try it, donāt. If you tried doing things early, but you feel better at a different time, stick to it. Everybody can find his time to shine and rise. But if you want to give at least a try, I have some tips how it got easier.
How can I wake up this early?
take your time. Donāt hesitate and try waking up early one or even two hours earlier than usual. It wonāt work. On the first day you will maybe feel ok, but insomnia and sleep deprivation will haunt you soon. Try waking up 10 to 15 minutes earlier each day instead.
be excited. If you plan something that excites you for the next day, you will be more motivated to rise.
stand up immediately? No. Although Iāve read many articles about this, it never would work for me. It made me feel even worse the first days. Try something different: Set your alarm for two times. Wake up with the first and stand up with second. It helps!
ābut itās the weekend!ā Let me tell you: time is relative. When you really want to create a new habit, you have to stick to it, no matter what. No matter if itās Wednesday or Sunday.
itās all about sunsets. I love waking up (even before) the sun sets. And now while itās winter, I bought my own. Jup, my answer is : sunrise alarms. A lifesaver!
Having difficulties not pushing the snooze button? There are apps that will challenge you when your alarm goes off! Best. Invention. Ever.
naps naps naps. Itās okay if you need a break. If you are tired. Learn to rest. You got this! 25min a day can save lives.
build a routine. Humans work o routines. Have fun, build your own! Coffee, making your bed, bullet journaling or writing, you do you.
I hope I could help somewhat - I believe you can do anything you want and take in action! Cheers to you. Xx
w e e k l y productivity // oct. week 42
managed to get a few notes done despite going on a mini holiday in Tampere. even did some reading while getting my tattoo done.
all-in-all a good week, but i have some catching up to do if I plan on staying on schedule for my uni entrance exams prep.
Sometimes Iām overwhelmed with the insatiable desire to learn. To know astronomy and geography and language and architecture; to recognize each constellation, planet, and star; to speak and understand all languages, be able to decipher ancient Greek and Latin text; to grow my understanding of how the human body works; study the differences and similarities of each religion; recognize the use for each herb and seed and sapling.
I want to better myself, not for fame or recognition or power. I just want to understand.Ā
120818 / / ššæš [thereās no calculator emoji? im offended] after a long lasting burnout and several procrastination sessions, i am finally back on studying. today i will study for literally 9298 topics since i have two finals tomorrow, and one more tuesday. summer school, i sincerely hate you and canāt wait you to be over. circuit analysis, its lab and advanced calculus are worse than plastics btw.
Being kind
Being kind is so important to me right now. It hasnāt always been like that with me though. I was never mean but I wanted to be. I wanted to be tough, not realising thereās so much strenght in kindness. Hereās a few kind things you can do, if you donāt know where to start:
Properly greeting everyone and always saying thank you and please
When someone messes up, be understanding (the looks of relief youāll get from waiters or cashiers say a lot about how they get treated)
When someoneās doing something, help them if you can, especially if theyāre doing it for you (e.g. carrying gorceries)
Pay full attention to the person talking to you
Compliment people on things you like
Use your skills to help others (subjects youāre good at etc)
Share things you have (not just food, you can share notes and other stuff)
Apologise when you mess up
Smile at people
Make small handmade gifts
Think kindly of yourself
Give yourself permission to slow down
Have a nice day!

Wrote 500 words on my assignment, so I had to treat myself to a hot chocolate!
things i have learned and/or need to remember during my phd that i will pass on to every graduate student who may follow me:
1. your advisor did not accept you because you know everything already, and they know this. your advisor accepted you because they see in you the ability to become a great scholar. if you already were one, you wouldnāt need to go to school to be trained. 2. you arenāt going to be productive 24/7. there will be days where you do nothing. your mind needs to rest. donāt feel guilty. it will all get done even if you take the day off. human beings cannot do work from sunrise to sunset all day every day. most importantly, let yourself go to parties, happy hours, and social things that allow you to make friends and strengthen bonds because those friends literally save your mental health during this process. 2.5 let summers take a much slower pace than the school year. allow summer to be a break, even if youāre in the field. as much as you can, spend much more time doing fun things and resting up for the upcoming year. GO OUTSIDE. ride a bicycle. spend as little time indoors as possible, even if you do work outside. 3. your topic is malleable. you arenāt married to the idea you applied with. you arenāt even married to what your advisor wants you to do. itāll grow with research, time, and perspective. let the research take you where you need to go. 4. get out of your usual spot. donāt sit in your apartment, or the same coffee shop, or the library. go somewhere new to do work. i recommend somewhere with big windows. my secret is doing work on campus on the weekends when nobody is there. inner peace! 5. nobody read every word of that seminar book. not even the smartest person who seems like they have the most to say. they skimmed and strategically read lit reviews. learn to do this. also, find a friend in class and talk out the argument together, and what evidence the author uses. if you are in an MA and havenāt been taught how to find the thesis yet, start doing this with every single book you read. if the author argued something well or used a writing method you liked, make a note. if they didnāt, make a note. keep every set of notes you made for every book. learn from successes and mistakes of others. 6. keep your friendships that you made outside of academia. academia is a bubble and it drags you down and you seldom get to come up for air. spending time outside the bubble is important. itās too tempting to slip into academia talk with your phd friends. and of course, itās one of the most important things to me to keep a strong relationship with my friends back home. this also goes for keeping your academia friendships strong over the summer. 7. enjoy it. we all complain. but donāt forget that you actually love it and it completes you. let yourself love it and appreciate it! itās hard getting to a phdā¦. enjoy how much you love your topic and how hard youāve worked!
