“All valid points. Aside from the usual I haven’t seen anything very telling of the particular issue at hand. You seen any witches hellbent on destruction? That’s what I’d look for.”
“If I have, they’re not very obvious that they are. If I do see something, I will let you know. Honestly, I think the best bet is to look for someone being overly normal. Overcompensating.”
“I’ve managed to adjust over the years but even this is excessive for me. I think the lake? It’s early enough that I don’t think many people will be down there.”
“I’ve not got as many years as you right now. But the lake sounds perfect. The usual spot?”
“Well, lets both forget I mentioned it!”
“We totally should. Just focus on what we can do.”
“It’s quite possible to be allergic to sunscreen, and it’s the only reason I’d need.”
“It is, yes. But most people who are would have found an alternative.”
“Who did you think I was?”
“A customer, silly,” she said with a bright smile. “Come on. It’s my treat today.”
“It’s the heat probably. It’s died down a bit but not enough. C’mon.”
“If it’s over seventy, I tend to be hot.” She smiled at Erica before nodding her head. “What spot should we hit today?”
“You’re not the only one, most of us are clueless right there with you. Have you seen anything suspicious?”
“There are always suspicious things happening around here. But nothing out of the ordinary. Though people tend to do that kind of stuff in the privacy of their own homes. Have you seen anything? Is there something I should be looking out for?”
“ Figures, ” Hailey whispered quietly, shaking her head, “ Doesn’t hurt to hope though, I guess. ”
“I think all we have is hope right now. I don’t think we can think about what might happen if things go bad.”
“Eh I was thinking more about forgetting the giant magical force field around the town, but sure - even if it is temporary.”
“I’m not even letting myself think about that. If I do, I’m going to loose it.”
“Best idea I’ve heard all day, Bels. I meant to go earlier but work took over.”
“I need to recharge a bit. I feel drained for some reason.”
“Shit like that doesn’t happen without it.”
“Not at all. Though I don’t think I’ve ever gotten drunk and taken my clothes off. Not in public, I mean.”
“I’m uh - allergic to sunscreen?”
“Allergic? Or is there another reason you don’t want to swim?”
“More than one, I’m sure. Not even the locals seem to be very big fans of the place.”
“I’m not sure what’s going on. It makes me nervous, that’s for sure.”
“Entertainment purposes, sure. I’ll continue despising the motherfucker who drowned me until I succumb to mortal injuries or fire; I’d only stay away from water if I got that pissed off at the tetras, simply put.” His head rose, shrugging. “Killing or cutting legs off isn’t bad. I’ve seen worst methods for death,” he sheepishly replied. “I don’t have a tail and all that shit — I’m not no fucking merman, but I wouldn’t oppose to the idea of having one. As long as I’m not a vampire or werewolf, I’m good.”
“Nobody blames you for hating them,” she said as she leaned against a table nearby. “If anyone does, they’re stupid. I’d be mad as hell if someone drowned me. Even if I did survive.” She paused for a moment. She wanted to ask what worse ways to die he had seen but she thought better of it. She did want to sleep tonight. “You’re kind of a merman. And I’m kind of a mermaid. Though I haven’t found a taking fish or crab yet. If I do, I’m calling Disney. Tails would be cool though. But the gills are cool, too.” She smiled at him. “Don’t avoid the water too long. Trust me. It ends badly.”
“I’m not a fan of cupcakes, to be honest— or just cakes in general. It’s a texture thing for me.”
Bel took another chip and smiled at her. “There has to be some dessert you like that we can steal.”
“As someone who’s been in the company of hunters more than I should, you’ll find different methods as to how they can be dodged,” he responded with reassurance. “Humans aren’t the issue. Protecting them is a difficult task since most wound up meeting death, however who’s able to predict that? The minute someone reveals about the supernatural, it’s impossible keeping their behavior in tact without them alerting higher authorities. With tetras rarely known around Red Creek, I prevent myself from meddling into drama. Ain’t need no fucking headache.” Beginning to fetch a few tools, the male continued their conversation while working on her oil filter. “I’m not going to murder you. The Twilight Series was shit, anyway. We’re fish, Bel. With actual gils. I can’t tell if I should laugh or cry.”
“It is much easier to let the others go after each other. It’s part of the reason out of everything, I’m glad we are what we are. We’re a group that all we do is go swimming once a month. We could be a lot worse. We could have to kill or cut legs off or something.” She couldn’t help but laugh, giving him a smile. “You laugh about it. We’re basically mermaids. Or in your case, a merman. You have to admit, that’s pretty cool. Though don’t try and comb your hair with a fork. That doesn’t work too well.” She moved over closer to him. “You have to be honest....there are worse things you could have been turned into.”
“This is why people become professional thieves, I finally understand it now. Wanna be my side kick?”
“Only if we start stealing cupcakes, too. The only thing I like better than chips is cupcakes.”
