Laura watched as Diana spoke to the exhausted humans, a small sigh leaving her nostrils when the Amazon’s words finally reassured them enough to agree to stay. It’d taken the mutant so long to get them to move, to get them out of the poorly barricaded apartment building and on the way to the underground tunnels–it would have all been a waste if she had to make good on her word and take them back because they didn’t feel secure in Wonder City.
The brunette followed as the group walked towards the center of the hidden city, the corner of her lips lifting slightly when the mother thanked her for escorting the family all the way from Blüdhaven. She stayed behind alongside Diana, nodding in agreement to her statement. “Some don’t want to be found,” she replied, crossing her arms along her chest. “Either because they think they are better off on their own, or are too afraid to attempt the journey.” Like the family Laura had brought, who had elderly and infant members who wouldn’t make it if they encountered any of the infected alone. “–It’s getting harder to convince them there are safe places to go.”
.
it’s been a hard journey, to ensure wonder city is kept safe from the fallen. one slip up, one wrong move could expose them, and diana couldn’t let that happen. not when she houses so many of the remaining uninfected humans here. but they managed it, they found a way to shore up the city, and she’s determined to defend that for as long as she possibly can. no one who entrusts their lives to her here is going to find themselves betrayed, not if she has anything to do with it.
“i know.” diana agrees softly. “it’s been a very long three years, laura. people like them.. they’ve seen too much to be so easily convinced to leave what relative safety they’ve been able to make for themselves. you did well to convince them.” can she blame them, really? if they’ve found a way to survive this long without aid, it wouldn’t be an easy decision to leave. even if there is promise of safety at the end. pausing, diana turns to face laura properly, her forehead furrowed with a frown. “what do you feel would change their minds? what kind of hope would do so after all this time? you’re.. out there much more than i am, laura. whatever you’ve seen that may help, i’d be grateful for the advice.”
