Regulus had been roaming the corridors with no intention of direction, only sparring glances at what decorated the walls. The afternoon lunch had been forthcoming once again, being prepared without a flaw that he had only happily consumed. There were many familiar faces that he recognized sharing the splendor of the scenic trip. Some of which he knew through social events back in England and others who he only knew partially from seeing them in the community. This was not beyond his idea of time well spent but he wondered what the true meaning behind it was. This was much more exquisite than other social gatherings he had been to. The most discerning oddity was they were not in England and could only compare it to French benefit galas. He had halted and stared silently at the hellebore plants blooming in the courtyard when he heard the familiar shrill tone of Bellatrix. “You finding something like this disappointing is hardly surprising,” Regulus observed with a light tone. “Humor me about what is wrong here. Too many people?”

“I hope that’s your way of saying I have superb taste.” bellatrix retorted with a smirk. there was no denying that regulus had always been her favorite cousin. despite there being a rather significant age difference between the two, he seemed to understand his role in society far better than his brother ever had. not to mention, he was pleasant company to keep. his quick wit and amicability meant that she wasn’t dreadfully bored to have him around. “of course there are too many people, but I expected as much. there’s always too many people.” her tone was jovial enough, but she meant every word that she said. bellatrix was, shockingly, not a people person. sure, she was happy to entertain them, to wrap them around her finger just so, but it wasn’t as if she enjoyed their company. “but that’s not the case at all. we’ve heard stories of the flint hosted festivities for years. I simply expected it to be more. are you truly satisfied with food and pleasant scenery? we have that at home. if we’re going to travel so far, I expect to be entertained by more than my own devices and familiar company.”

Cora stood on a landing, leaning forward with her arms resting on the bannister so she could look down at the bustle underneath them. She couldn’t linger terribly long; she needed breakfast so she could go to the office and work but she was slow to get moving today. Hearing a familiar voice, she straightened and turn with a smile for Bellatrix. “I’m quite delighted by it all,” she said. “But then, the Parkinsons aren’t quite at the same level as the Blacks.” She had no reason to be ashamed of her family, but the Blacks were practically royalty among pureblood society.

“how true.” bellatrix said with a lilting chuckle. “but who is?” her tone was that of someone joking- light, playful, easy, but there was definitely a vein of truth in the statement. the blacks were not only essentially pureblood nobility in europe, but in all of the world. it made bellatrix a queen- something that she knew well. “even I know not to judge everyone on black standards. I only mean to say that I expected there to more to do. I can’t help but feel a little cooped up here. then again, I’ve never been much of a homebody. there’s too much to be done to stay indoors all day. how have you been passing the time?”

Date: March 17th 1979 Location: One of the many libraries in Hamilton Flint’s estate Available: for everyone

It was as if Isla had ended up in paradise when she pushed open a door to one of the many rooms. It was unbelievable how larger the building was and maybe it had not been a great idea to move around alone but she had just wanted to know more about what she could find around here. And it was only even better when she wandered into one of probably many libraries. As she kept the door open, she moved towards the shelves, her fingers tracing lightly over the many backs of the books. A smiled formed slowly on her lips. Yes, this was definitely her paradise.

Isla was pulled out of her thoughts and happy place when she heard something behind her that startled her. She quickly turned around to face whatever had happened behind her. “Hello?”

the estate was quiet. she didn’t know if it was simply everyone attempting their best to be respectful or if flint had truly decided to invite the most boring people imaginable to the festivities. either way, bellatrix was ready for something interesting to happen. so she decided to find something interesting, she just needed a partner. it was always a safe bet to find her dear cousin regulus wholed up in a library somewhere, and he was almost always willing to come play. instead, it was her cousin isla that she found amongst the shelves of books. bellatrix picked up a tome and closed it loudly to garner the girl’s attention.

she set down the book quietly and snuck around the shelf to appear in front of her cousin. “hello isla, darling.” bellatrix crooned. her curls waterfalled over her shoulder and she tilted her head to one side pleasantly. “I see you’re already making yourself quite comfortable. I expect there isn’t too much here that you haven’t read already, no?”

Narcissa was not a patient woman. She hated being made to wait, and she especially hated to wait for Lucius. He had promised that they would take a walk in the gardens this afternoon, and while she was sure that he had a very valid reason to be running behind schedule, he had probably been taking care of business or had run into one of his friends, she still didn’t appreciate being made to wait. But she wouldn’t act like a bitch when he finally arrived, instead she would assure him that it was quite alright that he had stopped to speak with a friend, or perhaps he was just sending a message to the Minister. 

She felt someone step up beside her and she turned her head, disappointed that it wasn’t Lucius. “Oh. Hello,” she greeted, her voice neutral. “I’m just waiting for Lucius. He’s just sending an owl to the Minister, even though we’re on vacation, he still has to work. I convinced him to come and take a break, though. So we’re taking a stroll through the gardens.”

“how droll.” bellatrix mused in a tone that made it clear that she was saying precisely the opposite of what she thought. “you are a woman of house black, cissa. there is precisely no reason for you to wait on anyone, and no one should think that making you wait is acceptable behavior.” she took her sister’s arm and wrapped it in her own. “come. we’ll begin to walk without him. malfoy is a smart man, I’m sure that he’ll be able to catch up. if not, then consider you company significantly improved.” a sly smile teased the corner of her mouth.

bellatrix loved her family. while some may believe it is only for the power that family name had given her, that was not the case. there was a strong loyalty in her for those with her own blood. regulus and narcissa she’d become especially protective of in recent years. in a much quieter, more delicate voice she said, “he’s not considering alternative proposals, is he? I thought that you had this under control. should I be concerned? or is this just typical male thoughtlessness?”

date: march 17 location: the flint estate status: open

the book in bellatrix’s hand smelled of ancient leather and had a heft to it that you would regularly only find in a well-curated library. incidentally both the black’s and the flint’s indeed had a well-curated library. she was flipping casually through the pages, only reading bits and pieces that appeared interesting as she strolled towards the courtyard of the estate. her husband had long since risen and left the comfort of their suite of rooms, and she supposed that it was time for her to make an appearance as well. there were expectations of her. she snapped the volume closed. “take this and place it on the table to the left of my bed.” she instructed the house elf which had been provided to her without even looking in the creature’s direction. instead, her gaze was drawn to someone at the end of the hall. bellatrix clasped her hands in front of her as she approached them. “does this live up to all of your expectations? personally, I’m finding it rather disappointing.”
