Bent Basket is closing its doors

Dear friends and customers,

After very deep reflection on how we want to proceed with Bent Basket in 2018, Faris and I have decided, with a heavy heart, to press pause on the Bent Basket. We apologize to those of you who’ve been emailing us about when the baskets will be available. And most importantly we apologize to those of you who’ve relied on Bent Basket to carry your favorite stuff. This decision has not been easy for us. 

Faris first designed Bent Basket as a university project almost eight years ago. It’s evolution from a design sketch to a product that has been featured in museums and magazines and most importantly on the bikes of thousands around the world is something we’re truly proud of. With your support, we were able to combine form and function to make carrying your stuff while you ride a better experience.

How You Can Double Your Income Working In The Bicycles Industry?

In the year 2013, the average annual salary of a bicycle mechanic was $22,337, throughout the different states of US. In California, the numbers raised up to $26,983, whereas, in New York, the annual salary of a bike mechanic went to about $26,046. These numbers have gradually increased not only in the matter of salaries, but also the parts have increased about 70% throughout the US.

When compared to the annual salary of a normal person in US, the total wages collected by a bike mechanic does not fall back a lot. The average cost of living a moderate life in the US per year is $20,194. This has given a special booming factor to the bicycle industry all over the world.

Below, there is a statistical calculation of the sales of different bicycle categories, from the year 2005, till 2015.

The numbers clearly show that 50% of the bicycle categories have seen a growth in the sales, which shows that the cycling industry is growing steadily throughout the world.

The Boom of Britain’s Cycling Industry

According to a report by the British Office for National Statistics, the sales for UK-made bicycles has increased from about £35m to £60m – between the years 2013 and 2014. As the British cycling market is witnessing a larger boom in the last few years, the production and sales of British-made bicycles have crossed over 70% last year.

Since Yorkshire hosted the start of the Tour de France in 2014, the demand for British-made bicycles has soared. There has been a 70% year-by-year growth in the production of UK-made bicycles, and similarly – the number of bicyclers have grown in Britain as well. 

However, the UK cycling-market holds just the fraction of the bigger picture, as US is not far behind; which was claimed to have a market of over six billion U.S dollars in 2015.

Here is a statistical report showing the top twenty local authorities of England – in which adults are seen cycling almost three times every week.

The Evolution Of The Bike Basket

From the time that early bicycles were designed to be safe for their drivers, manufacturers began enhancing not just the performance features of their bicycles but also creating different ways to make them more useful for users who desperately need additional space on the bicycle for carrying personal belongings or goods. Record of widespread usage of bicycle baskets and other accessories that make it easy for carrying goods started in the early years of the 20th century.

By then a number of authorities all over the world began phasing out carrying goods on short distances by horses or carriages, choosing to give workers bicycles with better carrying capacity. 

In Canada, who in the early part of the 20th century, brought large quantities of bicycles with baskets that were used by their postmen. Oh Canada, we always look up to you. 

In keeping up with the times, several bike cargo accessories were developed by a number of companies. Here are a few commonly used bicycle cargo accessories in the modern market:

Front bicycle basket / Rear bicycle basket

They are often mounted on the top handlebars in front or on luggage carrier at the back, usually made from composite materials, metal, plastic, or even interlocked whiskers.

Luggage carrier (racks) 

Quite popular cargo accessory that may be installed above rear wheel or less typically over the front wheel. They are widely used because cargo placed on them can be larger in bulk than pre-designed bicycle baskets.

Pannier

Set of attached baskets, boxes, bags or containers which are installed on either side of the bike. Initially used as cargo accessories on horses.

Saddlebag 

One more accessory that was earlier used on horse riding which was moved to bicycles are saddlebags. Formerly installed on all four sides of horse’s saddle, bike saddlebags are at present installed behind as well as below modern bicycle seats.
