Arrived in Sierpe, one of the southern most towns in Osa Peninsula, on the Pacific Coast. Pretty pleasant bus ride from the capital. Gonna go for a quick run. I'll be headed into the jungle tomorrow and completely off line for eight days. Everything here is off the grid. There are no addresses, just vague directions. Thought maybe I missed something, driving up into the mountains after nightfall yesterday. I was right.
I've had beans, rice and fish at least once every day since I've been here. I'm still not tired of beans, rice and fish. A meal like this will run you about four thousand colones (about 7 or 8 dollars)--if you eat at the real spots, not the slick touristy spots. The cruder the sign, the better (and cheaper) the food. Waterfall at the northern border of the preserve. A couple of the trails were closed, or I could've spent more time. I've had a great time in the mountains of Guanacaste, but I'm looking forward to warm and dry. I can't believe I've only been in the country five days! Tomorrow I ditch the rental car and take the long bus ride from San Jose, the capital, down to Sierpe, a tiny coastal town on the Pacific side, to prepare for my boat journey to Campanario Biological Station, where I'll spend 8 days--the rest of my trip. The observation point at the far southeast corner of the preserve really can't be captured with a camera. You're surround on three sides by clouds that sweep by like waves, and down below is the lush carpet of the forest canopy--full of the sounds of animals you don't see many of. Visited Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve this morning. Another three hour hike. Beautiful spot. Apparently the night hike is the way to go, when you see tree frogs and sloths. Next time. (at Monteverde Cloud Forest Costa Rica)
