Alex Yuan, a freshman from Oakland, N.J., turned the steps of the Electrical Engineering East Building into his own amphitheater Friday afternoon, playing music through a Tesla coil he built. An electrical engineering student, Yuan routed MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) files of popular songs to his coil via a fiberoptic cable, generating a spark that danced along to the notes and an amplified sound that attracted spectators.

First round-the-world solar flight to take off next month

“A plane powered by the sun will attempt an unprecedented flight around the world next month, the project’s founders said, seeking to prove that flying is possible without using fossil fuel.

Solar Impulse 2 is set to take off from Abu Dhabi with stopovers in India, Myanmar and China before crossing the Pacific Ocean and flying across the United States and southern Europe to arrive back in Abu Dhabi.

On its five-month journey of 35,000 km (22,000 miles), the engines will be powered only by solar energy.”

New amazing metal is so hydrophobic it makes water bounce like magic. 

Scientists at the University of Rochester have created a metal that is so extremely hydrophobic that the water bounces on it as if it were repelled by a magic force field. Instead of using chemical coatings they used lasers to etch a nanostructure on the metal itself. It will not wear off, like current less effective methods.

The applications can be revolutionary: From the construction of airplane surfaces—which will avoid water freezing of the fuselage—to non-stick pans to phones to computers to TVs to cars to whatever you can imagine made of metal.
