I’m a Griffith fan. I’m saying that as a foreword, because, even though I’m really trying not to be biased, I will probably fail a little bit.
That said, I will never excuse the things he did to Casca during the Eclipse. It was horrible and incredibly cruel. Him sacrificing the Hawks is probably something I can overlook to an extent, it was still something horrible, but it didn’t hurt me as much to see as Casca being raped. I think people hating Griffith for what he did is understandable, even though I don’t hate him, I just love him too much to hate him.
What bugs me the most about some of the Griffith haters though, is how apologetic they are about Guts trying to rape Casca as well, after everything she went through, after she basically went into that state, because she was raped by a person she trusted. I’m saying that as a Guts fan too, hell, he is my second favorite character! But it seems like hypocrisy? I don’t expect people to hate or even dislike Guts, but how about at least judging him a little?
I have read the manga on some online pages and from time to time I would read the comments. It bugs me to see the same people screaming how Griffith should die painfully for raping Casca post comments like “Oh poor Guts :’( this is so sad.” when Guts was about to do the same - to quote the manga - “like Griffith did.”. There are like one in a hundred, who actually judge Guts for that?
It’s annoying to see the same people say Guts was “taken over” by “the darkness inside him” when he did that. I hope those people realize that “beast of darkness” is a part of Guts’ personality itself and not an independent being, who possesses him? Just like Femto is what is left of Griffith, after he lost his humanity? But I still blame Griffith for what he did and not Femto, who was born from Griffith’s consciousness. Why won’t you blame Guts, instead of “the beast”, who was born from Guts’ mind too? Wasn’t Guts himself, (even after he snapped out of his dream) having doubts about whether he wanted to kill Casca or not, because she was in the way of his revenge?
If I (and many others) can accept loving a problematic character, why can’t you? Even on this blog, I’ve seen people say how they simply ignore what Guts did “because it wasn’t nearly as bad as what Griffith did.” Lol. I hope you don’t judge real people like that too, otherwise the jails would be empty, because nobody did worse than a certain person (you know who).
Again, I’m not even saying people should dislike Guts, I love him too, but don’t be such apologists for fucks sake. And whenever someone calls that out, most people ignore it, as if they are covering their ears, cuz they don’t wanna hear about the problematic shit their favorite did.
This also makes me feel as if no matter how shitty something in Berserk is, it is not seen as that shitty, until Guts falls a victim to it?
Random guys try to rape Casca: “Oh…that again…” vs. Guts tries to rape Casca: “POOR GUTS!!! He is losing himself!!!!”.
Casca reacts negatively towards people, who tried to rape her: “SLAY THEM GIRL!” Casca reacts negatively towards Guts, after he assaulted her: “I can’t stand her cold behavior, after he gave up on everything to protect her.” (yes, there are commets like that on mangahere for example.)
Griffith manipulates Charlotte: “LOL stupid duck.” vs. Griffith manipulates Guts: “Asshole, poor Guts trusts you!”
tl;dr: If you are going to judge characters on the basis of their doings, do it properly.
