Things were different today. Kris had noticed this feeling in the air and gone to sit by heir eggs. She could see slow cracks and tried to make the words form but they didn’t come out, not yet. Her eyes stayed on the eggs wondering if this could be the moment that her and Max had been waiting on. “Max, come quick.  I think it’s time.”  She yelled finally as she ran her hands along the eggs.

“Come on out, we waited for this … but wait till you hear your daddy’s voice. He can’t miss this moment.” Max had been waiting as patiently as she had and both had been concerned.

He could hear his footsteps and smiled. “ You hear him to? I know you do. Yu’re so smart already, so advanced.”

Max had been sprawled upside down on the couch, one leg flung over the other, foot tapping at the air restlessly as he typed away on his phone. The longer the eggs were taking to hatch, the more nervous and unsure he was about the whole thing- what if they WERE just ostrich eggs? What if she was lying to him, what if it was all some bizarrely elaborate joke or hoax, maybe she was drugging his water, maybe she didn't even exist and neither did the eggs and he had never actually checked out of that psych ward, this was all in his head and-

No. He'd had to stop the racing of his thoughts somehow, and so he'd been writing bars nonstop about anyone and anything he could think about. When he heard Kris's voice, though, what she said? The phone dropped from his hands and onto his face, his lack of grace getting him just like it always did as he managed to twist himself off of the couch and into an ungainly pile of limbs on the floor.

He'd pushed himself to his feet and dashed towards the babies' room before he'd truly regained his balance, careening into the wall some as he took the corner, the thud loud enough he was pretty sure he'd have a bruise later.

"Are you for real, is it actually-" He'd stopped speaking when he saw the tiny spiderweb of cracks that had spread over both of the eggs, his eyes widening behind his glasses, grip on the doorframe tightening momentarily before he drooped down beside her. He reached out as though to touch one, then the other, but didn't quite lay his fingers on them, leaving them hovering just above the warm surfaces, as though he didn't dare touch them. "Holy shit."
