The heat is just terrible isn’t it? I swear no amounts of fans will fix it. I mean maybe there is hope things will cool down soon?

Alex loved his flower shop. Starting the small shop a few years back had been one of the best decisions he had made in a long while. Sure, it was hard work, especially early in the morning when a new shipment of flowers came in, but he loved it. There was only one thing, or better said, someone he loved more than his shop, and Alex was currently on his way over to pick up that someone. He grinned when he heard Beth’s greeting. “We’re lucky to have you to drop in on,” he replied as he made his way over to her. “How she been? I hope she wasn’t any trouble?” Usually his daughter would find her way to Beth’s bookshop after school, but since summer break had started, she had been going there early in the afternoon.

Bethany shook her head and chuckled, “You are being too kind to me.” It really always made her day to see the both of them. She sat down the rest of the books, the organizing can be saved for later. “Oh she has been so wonderful she always is.” Bethany gushed as she turned back around. “I think I must have given her a good book suggestion because she’s been in her little nook the whole afternoon. But no worries she’s gotten some food and water too. I know how easy it is to loose track of time with a book.” She rambled before pausing, “No trouble at all. I hope you had a good day at the shop too.”

I’ve been called much worse things than insane, ha – at least this kind of insanity is of my own choosing, and not something I can’t control. After all the fuss for our 2-year anniversary, I might have to dial things down a little bit for a while, as much as I hate to risk losing people’s attention. I want to be back in full form and planning ahead for Pride in August as soon as possible, now.

I mean after all these events back to back I feel like you’d understandably deserve a break. I don’t think you’ll lose any attention if anything I’m sure you’ll leave people wanting more. And imagine just how excited they will be to hear about another event of yours.

It was a normal day at the bookstore, it had its calm moments and the busy ones. It made the day fly by until the time she always looked forward to, seeing if Faith would be stopping by or not. When she did she gave her an encouraging smile, giving her another book suggestion to read. She always had some water and snacks for her too. Bethany knew all too well how easy it was to lose track of time in reading and forget about the important things. She kept an eye on her as the afternoon went by, checking in on her between helping customers. While organizing her display table though she got to see another familiar face, another one she was always happy to see. Her face lit up with a smile, “Hey you! I’m just very lucky with my visitors today.”

I have yet to meet someone who hates living here. Although… I’m not too fond of the bikes, them things are killing machines. Or at least, some of the people riding them turn them into one. Yes, you… I don’t know of a lot of people who’d let a 5 year old crash at their store almost every day. And come check up if everything’s alright when said 5 year old decides to hang with her dad instead. It’s good to hear that she makes your days better too, though. Me stopping by the store to pick her up makes your day even better? 

It does appear that they get quite reckless doesn’t it? One would hope that if you try to stay aware of them you’d hope they’d do the same for you. I will say some of them are very friendly but some just worry me. I feel my heartbeat raise while they ride with such ease and confidence. I hope it doesn’t seem like I’m intruding when I check in, I suppose I just tend to worry more than I should. I just hope that all people I care about are safe. Of course it does, you are wonderful company as well. And very easy to talk to as well, that isn’t easy to find in people.

Never say never, you might still end up living in a castle like that. Although living in the middle of Amsterdam does have it’s charms as well. Oh, absolutely. Having my family and friends to fall back on has made it a whole lot easier to adjust to it all. And even now people help out, even if they don’t know or see it as helping me with taking care of Faith. Like for instance you and letting her sit and read in your store after school. I know she’s safe and she’s with someone I’m close with. That truly means a lot to me. 

You’re very right about that, there is never a time to give up on dreams like that. But you’re also right about the charms of Amsterdam. Especially the great people in it. I am so glad it has though you deserve all the support, the both of you. You will always have people in your corner I’m sure of it. Me? Well I am very honored to be able to help, I honestly feel like I’m the lucky one. She is doing a wonderful job making my own days better too. Plus it always makes it better when you stop by too.

Yeah, it seems like that. And with the summer coming up there are some big movies about to be released in theaters soon. I bet you love this town then, they’ve got so many old buildings here, so much history. And we get to walk right in the middle of it. Kinda cool, right? 

And with all the new movies it is the perfect time to catch up on any old movies to refresh your memories on any sequels. Oh I do I feel like love is an understatement! I grew up a little closer to the heart of the city but this area? It is probably my favorite. I feel like the buildings must hold so many stories, I wish I could hear all of them.

even I know that that movie has the home library of all libraries. So I can understand why you had huge dreams. That is true, in a way you do have your own library there. It’s one of the toughest things as a parent, especially as a single parent. Especially when she was just born, I had no idea what the hell I was doing and I was on the phone with my mom almost constantly to ask if this was okay, or if she had any tips and all that. But in the end I found my way and even if I say so myself, she’s turning into a great kid. Oh, absolutely. It was one of the things I loved so much about Melanie. Wow, thanks for the honor. I love knowing we’re special enough to get our own schedule. 

Doesn’t it? I use to dream of the day I could have a castle like that. Oh the dream and expectations that movie started for me. I have loved this place since I was a kid though, it was almost like it made a new dream for me. I couldn’t imagine how tough that was but that hard work and determination is so very admirable. And having that support? That must have made all of the difference. She is a wonderful kid and you are an amazing father. I am sure the list of those things is endless. Well it feels only fair when you guys are giving me such a large honor as well.

It takes a special kind of insanity to want to put yourself out there like that, I’ll be the first to admit that it’s not for everyone and that’s perfectly normal. You have confidence in other things, though – running a small business takes plenty of confidence, even if it’s not the singing-onstage kind. I just don’t want people to lose interest and get bored with what we have to offer – I want us to become so much a part of the community that people feel like we were always there, you know? Like the bookshop, actually.

Insanity? I think you certainly deserve to give yourself better credit than that. It is isn’t it? You don’t think about it a lot that way when you are so deep into it. But I suppose this isn’t a challenge that just anyone takes on. I couldn’t imagine anyone getting bored of you guys, you run a wonderful business. I was lucky enough to carry on such a wonderful business but I’m sure people just admire how hard you’ve worked to get where you are.

That’s true enough, I suppose. All sorts used to come through my Da’s pub, and he had a knack for being able to chat with just about anyone that I always envied just a bit. And just think of the different perspectives we’d get to hear about, from people from all different backgrounds that aren’t the same as ours – it’s a learning opportunity, honestly.

Now I wish I could have that power, I can go on and on about books but other things aren’t as easy. It must be so nice to just open up so quickly. I’m trying to get better at it myself but it is always easier said than done. That is the most fascinating isn’t it? Seeing all the things you can learn about people. I love learning.

A big part of those days will be spend in front of my TV catching up on all the series, there’s so much I’m behind on. I haven’t done that much touristy things in a long time so the going to museums tip you just gave is going to be on my list for sure. What’s your fave to go to? 

It seems like its the time of year for new shows to be coming on. I think the best is the history museum, but the art ones are wonderful too. Something about history though is just fascinating, seeing the photos, the clothing and the items. It is so very immersive.

A whole scrapbook that functioned as a mood board for your dream room/library? Some might call it a little over the top but you could also see it as being very dedicated to get it right. Exactly, you want to be able to at least keep a bit of an eye on them. Yeah, it is nice that she knows what she wants and likes. She’s more like her mother in that way the older she gets. As you should be. Only the really important moments go on that board. 

I think once I watched Beauty and the Beast I had huge dreams. I like the sound of the latter that much more. And in a way I did get my own library with the bookstore. Well of course, I feel like it must be such a struggle to find that balance between giving independence but still knowing its for their own good to have you keeping an eye on them. How beautiful though and what a wonderful trait to get from her mother. I feel like it would only be fair to add you guys to a special schedule too. You two really deserve it.

Growing up in a bookshop sounds like a dream, honestly – I grew up my dad’s pub, it’s a very different sort of vibe. I just like the idea of having a group where we get to know each other’s taste in books well enough to make recommendations like that – even if it’s only a few people at most.

Although it must have been a great learning moment too. A great way to learn about a variety of people. I couldn’t agree more, I love getting a chance to talk to people who love books as much as I do. Just imagine all the recommendations they must have up their sleeve.

As long as we can coax you into joining in for a song or two! I’m honestly used to it by now – at least here the judgement is good-natured and teasing, that’s so much better than the alternative. It’s a little more streamlined the second time around, at least – between that and Throwback Thursdays, I ought to be a pro at getting these little events set up in no time, ha.

I may be able to join in as long as I’m not up there alone. It may be shocking as a business owner but I just don’t have that confidence to perform like that. It is beyond admirable though, you seem like such a natural. Oh much better than the alternative, I’d hope people here wouldn’t be that harsh. That is something to be so proud of though, events on top of daily operations can be hard to manage.

My weekend starts now! 4 whole days off from work, what’s a guy to do? No, seriously, what to do? So far all I have planned is watching Obi-Wan Kenobi Friday, other than that nothing scheduled yet. So suggestions are welcome.

What a wonderful opportunity, that isn’t something one gets too often. It would be quite a pity to not take advantage of it. Of course I feel like relaxing and watching tv should be a part of it but you could possibly do some exploring. It may not be fun to others but I really enjoy going to museums. Or even just going out to parks and getting some fresh air.

As the one in the Princess Diaries? That one looked cool. I don’t know if, as a parent, I’d be happy if my kid had a room like that, but for the kids it’s a great room, you can completely close it off. No parents allowed, ha. Knowing Faith, she’ll let you know if there’s one possibility she likes or if she hates it. I’ll write it down on our blackboard wall - Sunday, Beth’s coming. 

Almost, I’ll have to show you some pictures. I was a little over the top and had a whole scrap book of what my dream room or library would look like. I completely understand, I would be worried sick if there wasn’t an easy way to see them or just check in on them. That is wonderful though, she knows what she wants and likes. On the black board? I feel honored.
