Creative Entrepreneur Module Evaluation

I really enjoyed the creative entrepreneur module this year. It enabled me to do things that I wouldn’t of necessarily have done if left to my own devices with the same brief.

  Working in pairs was something that I always am anxious of and I was worried there would be a major falling out between me and Kayleigh over our creative ideas as we both have completely different styles and ways of doing things. By having different styles and methods I actually think it helped both of us develop new skills and ideas. We both learnt a lot about working together and making design decisions in a pair, which is something we have usually done on our own. I have learnt to compromise and take on advice and opinions on my ideas and designs with a pinch of salt and to listen instead of just carrying on with my own ideas without feedback.

Having a brand handed to us instead of choosing it ourselves made us think in a different way. Had it been one I could of chosen I don’t think the outcomes world have been as strong as they were. The first brief to find the brand values of our given brand was very difficult. I found our brand may have been to broad to give it a specific target market (as it is still a growing business), although this did allow us to have many different options of products and we could tailor it to lots of different people.

  The design process was very lengthy and we had lots of different ideas, twists and turns and lots of different outcomes. I think this was good for me as I tend to only think of a handful of ideas then just go with my favourite, but coming up with lots of ideas and narrowing them down as a pair made me realise that I need to work on generating ideas and initial visuals to separate my good ideas from those that are awesome and would go further.

  We made ourselves a set of design rules at the beginning of the project to make sure we were both thinking about the same products and using the same colour scheme to avoid overloading ourselves with wacky and unusable ideas and to ensure we kept our products identity. This meant we both had to think specifically about the rules we set to come up with more comprehensive ideas and designs. I think I will use this method in the future to make sure I am sticking to the brief.

  Overall I think that this module has helped develop my creative skills especially when it comes to generating ideas and thinking outside the box. I also believe working in a pair has helped me become more organised. I now split time up for specific tasks and try to be more productive and motivated with my time. I enjoyed using a blog and using it to track my progress and my improvement.

Cereal Magazine 19.03 14 Rosa Robbie Rich Print and publishing Established in December 2012 Based in Bristol Editions published quarterly. 20,000 copies distributed to 35 countries. Started as a food and travel mag and now based around travel and lifestyle. Basic greyscale 5 colour style. One serif font one sans serif. Classic book design influenced by the pared back, sparse, timeless and beautiful old books like penguin. Has a chapter structure to add continuity and format. The website is classic, clean and minimal. Highly visual to keep the attention of the viewer. Tuesday is blog upload day and Thursday is features day. Social media Instagram: if the image does not conform to the style of the magazine DONY POST IT! It compromises the feel of the magazine. Balancing business whilst being a creative is a lot of hard work. Publishing and distributing is expensive. The costs to distribute abroad is extortionate. Advertising is a good way of making good money. Cereal dont put adverts in that dont match the feel of the mag. If they don't like the brand or use it then they wont promote it. Were lucky enough to re-design and shoot some ads to make them bespoke to thier own brand. Cereal is a lifestyle so the products in thier shop are equally as well designed and styled to meet thier brand style and connect with the 'cereal' people.

Most decorated designer in D+AD history. Extraordinary lack of knowledge and enthusiasm from clients. Paying for the designers experience an design. Designers should be seen as equals not as just another service group. If you spend £100,000 -£200,000 on design and corporate identity in this day and age it should last three years. Clients get what they deserve and pay for. In 1960s design wasn't big on radar. Graphics was call commercial design. typography and graphics were separate courses until the 70s.
