Pierce Island in Portsmouth, NH--a Great Day Trip for Dogs & Their Humans I'm excited to share our new favorite doggy destination with you...the "dog park" (not fenced in, seemed more like open conservation land) at not too far away Pierce Island in Portsmouth, NH We had a fabulous half-day trip there this weekend! My older borzoi, Tatsu, enjoyed soaking in the salt water. He made use of every little beach-like area we passed. My 4-mo old borzoi puppy, Iniya, chased after a lab who went charging out into the water after a ball. She swam for the first time ever (although her momma was perfectly ready to go in to fish her out if needed. ) I was so proud of my little lady! She got three small handfuls of beef in hopes that she'll be willing to try it again--it's such great exercise! I'd love for her to develop a liking for swimming. I also began the first baby step towards Ini's off-leash reliability using a 30-ft training lead as "training wheels." Pierce Island is a great location for that sort of training exercise! There's enough vegetation to provide beautiful scenery, but not so much that the long line snagged often. Iniya got to enjoy a total of about 20 minutes off leash divided up into about 3 segments. She did beautifully! The fall foliage made for a lovely drive, all the dogs and people we met were nice and the whole day was pretty magical. If you are looking for a new place to enjoy with your dogs, Pierce Island in New Hampshire is well worth the approximately hour-long drive from Picture Perfect Pets in Burlington, MA. Iniya & Tatsu both give Pierce Island two-paws-up!
