sal and I rewatched Aladdin recently, and I was like. stunned at just how good it looked.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how animation is just a *better* storytelling medium for most of Disney's movies, particularly with the live-action Moana looking......just..........so bad. And scenes like this are exactly the reason. Like there's a reason Disney's whole thing has always been "magic"; it really was spectacular back then, and live action has limitations that just can't be made up for with a ton of CGI (or worse, AI).

For comparison:

No contest. I mean, even if we weren't comparing to Robin Williams's iconic performance, the live action still feels low-energy and flat. If you watch "Prince Ali," it has some similar issues: they didn't have the budget to realize all the amazing visuals and effects, so they cut away to shots of random townspeople every few seconds as if that will deceive the audience into thinking the scene is more exciting.

I think Beauty and the Beast kind of worked as a live action remake, for the same reason that this movie is a mess: there aren't tons of huge feats of magic or shocking, flashy visuals, etc. The aesthetic focus is on the palace, the Beast, and his servants, meaning the people producing it could put most of their energy into making sure those things looked good. Except Disney saw its success(?) and thought "ah yes, this is what we're doing now" and proceeded to pump out a hundred more that there wasn't really any demand for.....

anyway I'm tired of being squeezed for every cent of 'nostalgia' I'm worth 🙃

Im starting to feel drained. 4:40am it might be my fault for not sleeping but I genuinely just feel tired of everything I have no energy to do anything. I think Im starting to lose my spark for the things I find fun and Im just not motivated to do anything anymore 💔💔
