Pidge: (hacker voice) I'm in.
Shiro: I don't think you're supposed to say "hacker voice".
Pidge: People I work with all think my name is Pidge Gunderson.
Lance: Yeah -wait, what?
Pidge: Donât worry about it
Pidge shrugged, âYeah, itâs gone. We. Well we have to.â Pidge shoved their head into Shiroâs chest, âThe hard way is just the best I guessâÂ
âOf course its the best way. I donât think the others would agree with you, though.â Shiro rested his chin on top of Pidgeâs head, âAre the lions recovering alright? Black says they are, but she could just be lying to me to make sure I donât worry.â
Pidge nodded, âI think so.â then shrugged, âGreen feels⊠Okay, But wonât talk to me about it. So I think they are but,,, Yanno?â they pushed their head up into Shiroâs chin.
âThatâs good. I bet exposure to all that power in the Quintessence field made them all feel a little weird. Black sure does.â Shiro let Pidge snuggle up close, content to just enjoy the warmth and feeling of someone so close after nearly a year without any sort of contact, or being able to feel anything at all.
Pidge frowned and bit him again, âDonât go there, youâre back. Just. Be back.â then immediately went to the topic of the lions to avoid having to keep on Shiroâs⊠Being gone. âPretty sure. Green⊠Canât quite talk to me right now. I can feel her trying but itâs mostly just feeling her feelings,â
Shiro shrugged off the play bite, used to it after so many years. âHmm, thatâs strange. Maybe they just need more time to recover? Blackâs talking to me okay but⊠I was kind of living inside of her for a year. I donât think I count.â
âYou deserve thisâ Pidge mumbled, then nipped at him again before pulling back far enough to lift the edge of his shirt and curl up underneath it. âShe probably does, Iâm glad Black is talking to you but if dying is what it takes, donât mind if I donât do that for green.â
Shiro just sighed loudly in mock defeat as Pidge curled up under his shirt. âYeah, donât do that. It comes highly unrecommended, trust me.â he patted the lump under his shirt, âwhat time is it, anyway? Day, night?â
The lump shrugged, âHere? Day, but I havenât fully done the math comparing it to earth yet. Iâve mostly figured it out but you know how that sort of math is.â they bonked their forehead into Shiro. âWell okay maybe you donât but anyway I think itâs about midnight back home.â
Pidge shrugged, âYeah, itâs gone. We. Well we have to.â Pidge shoved their head into Shiroâs chest, âThe hard way is just the best I guessâÂ

Shiro was getting better. That was all anyone could manage to say. He wasnât going to dip back into⊠Not there. He was getting better. But. That gave no hint of if⊠When he was going to wake up. So maybe Pidge snuck into black when no one else was there to curl up on him. It wasnât like Shiro was going to push them off. Pidge curled up under his chin, liking the noise and soft movement of his chest that proved he was alive. Yeah, maybe they shouldnât be doing this, but it felt safe after all that had happened.Â
Shiro had been deep in a dreamless sleep when the Black Lion nudged at his consciousness, rousing him slowly and informing him he had a visitor. He almost shrugged it off and let himself drop away again when he felt the cot he was sleeping on tilt and something warm curl up on his chest. His eyes blinked open, vision fuzzy, but he knew who it was instantly regardless. He snaked his arm over them and pressed them firmly against his chest, burying his nose in their hair.
âHey.â he croaked out.
If asked about it later Pidge absolutely did not freeze and nearly fling themself off of Shiro. But they would have been lying. So the real story is Pidge jerked then froze, before realizing any attempt at escape was futile, so just pushed up into Shiroâs hold like the panic never happened. âH-Hey Shiroâ then rambled off into an awkward, âSo hey I might not have mentioned to everyone else that Iâm in here but also hey that Isnât the important part because youâre awake but yeah I.â Pidge paused and pushed their head more into Shiroâs range. âYouâre awakeâ
Shiro almost let go when they suddenly jolted, afraid heâd startled them, but when the tenseness vanished he let the thought pass. He listened quietly as they spoke, still sleepy, but was glad when they pressed close again. He responded by playfully rubbing his nose through their hair, the closest to ruffling it he could do with the one arm.
âI am, and itâs good to see you, Pidge,â he mumbled a bit into their hair, âare you holding up alright?â
Pidge shrugged yet pushed into Shiroâs hold in the same movement, âAs good as ever,â ShIro usually knew when they were lying, but this wasnât a lie⊠Technically. They just. Werenât exactly ever fine.
Pidge carefully rubbed their nose on Shiroâs cheek so he couldnât say much, then let out a rushed, âhow are you?â
Shiro hummed happily, returning the gesture by brushing his nose across their forehead. âMâfine, for the most part. Tired.â he shifted his hand a bit so it was resting against their back, rubbing slow circles through their shirt. âFeel like I could sleep for a few years at least. Pretty sure Iâll live, though.â he exhaled a rough noise, almost a bark of a laugh.
Pidge proceeded to make the tiniest cuddliest ball of themselves physically possible, pushing back against any and all rubs. âGood. Donât. Donât do that again.â they didnât want to say what, and figured Shiro would probably understand. Pidge gave him another nose kiss to his cheek, âIâm glad youâre okayâ
Shiro blinked, hand slowing to a stop. âHey, hey itâs alright,â he shushed, bringing his hand up instead to scratch gently at their scalp, âIâll do my best, okay?â he could tell that they were upset, and suddenly the way they had jerked away from them when heâd woken up sat heavy behind his ribs.
âAre you sure youâre doing alright?â
Pidge looked up at Shiro immediately, âYeah, but⊠Not that âdonâtâ.â then wrapped up as close as they could, like an odd interpretation of some sort of blood sucking parasite. Then trying to stay as quiet as possible mumbled something along the lines of, âDonât want to lose anyone again.â Then straightened up, (though gave him another nose kiss), âAnyway I know you havenât seen it but the sun-star? sets on this planet are really cool and you should go look when youâre up for itâ
Shiro let out a heavy exhale, burying his face into their hair again. âI know, Pidge. Iâm sorry I hurt you. You shouldnât have had to go through that,â Keith had filled him in shortly after heâd started to stay conscious longer, and Allura had told him about the nightmare that was the virus that crippled the Castle, âbut Iâm proud of you for doing it.â
Pidge frowned, papped him on the cheek, then looked down, realizing that isnât something you normally do. âThatâs not it. And really shut up. If I was upset about it Iâm not the kind of person to lie about that.â Pidge looked up and tried a smile, âI like you, okay?â it was easier to say then a bunch of random words about how it wasnât his fault, and they didnât really like the âthanksâ.
Shiro just smiled a bit when they bapped his cheek. He ducked down quickly, pressing a quick little peck to the top of their head. âI like you too, Pidge. Still, I am proud of you. For a lot of things, not just that. Youâve come a long way since we started.â he added, using his hand to ruffle up their hair affectionately.
Pidge did what made the most sense in the moment to alleviate their concern. Pidge bit him. Softly of course, but they still did. âLetâs not go there.â they said as if they hadnât just bitten their friend, âYouâre here and we are good.â
Shiro was used to that sort of reaction from Pidge and barely reacted besides patting the top of their head. âAlright, fair enough. So⊠those sun-star-sets you were talking about, they really all that pretty? Enough for me to drag myself out of my very comfortable bed?â
Pidge shrugged but used the movement to cuddle closer to Shiro, âNah.â they tapped their fingers on the bed beside Shiro, âItâs not, what has anything on sleep really. But, Itâs almost good enough to get up, So you should. Whean you can. You know.â
âYeah, sleep is pretty great. Probably the greatest.â Shiro agreed, wrapping his arm around them again so they were more comfortable, âI guess Iâll make that my first thing to do when I feel like heading outside. For now though, sleep is good.â
Pidge snuggled into the hold, âIâll be the one to drag you out.â they looked up, despite being pressed in too close for Shiro to really see. âGet better fast, who else can I spar to knoe Iâm awesome.
âNone of the other paladins wanting to spar with you? Their loss then. Maybe when I can stand Iâll let you kick my ass.â Shiro teased, already itching to get healthy and back to form.
Pidge relaxed, letting their limbs fall loose, but still on shiro, âEh, some people just donât like to lose.â They bumped their face on him again, âYouâll get there.â
âThen I guess weâll just have to remind them how itâs done. Theyâre probably getting soft now with all this downtime. But⊠without the castle, I guess weâll just have to train the hard way, huh?â
Pidge shrugged, âYeah, itâs gone. We. Well we have to.â Pidge shoved their head into Shiroâs chest, âThe hard way is just the best I guessâ

For a lot of things, not just that. Youâve come a long way since we started.â he added, using his hand to ruffle up their hair affectionately.
Pidge did what made the most sense in the moment to alleviate their concern. Pidge bit him. Softly of course, but they still did. "Let's not go there." they said as if they hadn't just bitten their friend, "You're here and we are good."
