Hello, I'm Big Ed, I am an Engineer, and for those of you who do not know an Engineer is the purest definition of a problem solver, it is our natural gift to see how something can be improved or fixed, and then immediately pursuing any and all information required to enact said improvements or repairs. We are a mathematical lot, always measuring, cooking numbers, drawing graphs and charts and whatnot, and I take this very approach to art. And I by no means imply that I see a work of art and figure I could just improve it and everything will be better, I am simply just explaining the analytical approach an engineer takes to everything. I call my artwork Engineered because I approach drawing in a very analytical and mathematical light. Not to say that I find no joy or creativity in art, I just like to follow a well balanced foundation. My usual approach is to begin with a geometry profile, obtaining measurements from hundreds of existing artistic works across the internet to begin with a basic circle, oval, block, and stick skeletal shell of what the finished project will be, and after manipulating and shifting those basic geometries around I commence the freehand drawing and coloring. Bah, run on sentences, my Technical Writing teacher would have me in a noose. Anyway tl;dr I make boxes and circle analysis diagrams before I draw pretty colors and lines on top to give my art shape and color. Please feel free to ask me questions or suggest a thing to draw to me, and I will do my best to not get fired from my job for slacking off while I draw. The workshop has a ton of deadlines this week, I may not be able to draw much or at all as I am sacrificing my breaks to fix high priority equipment. Sorry X_X
I am sick at work today, I am SICK, in a HOSPITAL. This can only end very poorly. I am going to hang out in the workshop and do workshop things, and ask the other engineers to handle calls. I wanted to do a Freedom Planet drawing today because its one of the best indie games I have ever played, but I was so weak and sick that I literally just put the paper on my phone and traced it. Halfway through the tracing I said "Hell no that's cheap" and stopped myself, then I drew an apology. Don't worry folks, Lilac will get a REAL drawing on Monday!
This one was interesting, I basically wanted to draw Fiona, so I found some online references, but the style was too samey to the original, and the pose was boring, so using what I learned I redrew her in a more action oriented pose! I had fun with this one, but it is not my best, in fact I think its my worst so far. -.-
This is my second 15 minute drawing today, its a special one for a good friend that may fall on a hard time soon, but like this magnificent bastard you see here, he too is the greatest. I believe in you man, rock on.
This one took almost over 15 minutes ~_~ as a result it looks a but rough, but heck forcing yourself to push out finished work in a timeframe helps improvement, and besides you can't polish a turd, you can only make it look as nice as possible with the time you have.
Another one of my 15 minute break drawings, I get two breaks a day, so I’m gonna sketch alot more as the days go on. This is kindof an OC, its a long story, basically me and a friend wrote a speculative fanfic about “what if Wakeman went on to build more robots, who then in turn built more of themselves, who then created a civilization that flew on a moon sized megacruiser dispensing justice across the galaxy.
This is how Ed engineers his artwork, how he learns from other artists to practice various proportions and styles.
I take the existing work and build a geometry profile, craft a stick figure, and then go full freehand.
I have left out the original work that I got the geometry profile from, because I did not want to look like I was taking any level of credit for their work.
This is basically a redesign of Quanta's outfit, and the final product may have her less....crazy looking, she looks like she is about ready to go psycho crazy on the viewer :P
My very first upload! I was inspired of course by Lauren Fausts brilliant concept for an animated series, Milky Way and the Galaxy girls. Think Sailor moon Meets PPG.
Her name is Quanta, through constant study and practice in every field of mathematics known to mankind, she has reached a level of cosmic nirvana that has allowed her to manipulate Quantum Foam (the matter that makes up reality itself) to enhance her body in various ways for various pursuits.
From changing the local force and velocity of her fists or feet to shatter walls, or opening a rip in space and time to travel from point A to point B, all of her powers are made possible by her ability to rapidly calculate ludicrous levels of mathematics to change her localized reality.
Her weakness is ignorance and lack of practice, the old saying goes if you don't use it, you lose it. Too much time spent on mind rotting activities, failing to maintain a brain healthy diet, or just not knowing something could present to her a brick wall of a challenge unless she endeavors to get her act together and apply her brilliance to decoding and assimilating new information, getting out of in front of her videogames to exercise her mind, or just choosing the apple over the candy bar.
I guess that's all I can think of for now...OH
I really hope Lauren Faust sees this, I worked hard on it and I know GG original characters are rather rare, this is my way of both expressing myself, and showing my support for her beloved Galaxy Girl project.
