I was out for an exercise run around the neighborhood when I saw two cars parked in my new neighborâs driveway for the first time. Iâd known the house next door had been sold for a while but hadnât seen the buyers since learning it had been sold. All my wife and I saw were movers and trucks over there for the past few weeks. Now that theyâd actually moved in, I decided to wait outside for one of them to walk out and see me so I could start a conversation. When nobody walked out, I pulled out my phone and called my wife.
      âDamian, Iâm busy with something at work,â she told me after answering my call. âIs something wrong?â
      âNah, everything is cool,â I told her. âBut guess what?â
      âI think the new neighbors have finally moved in.â
      âReally? Are they white?â
      âI donât know. They havenât come outside since I noticed the two cars in the driveway.â
      âI hope theyâre not white.â
      âTheyâre probably black. White people donât willingly move into a neighborhood thatâs a majority black neighborhood unless theyâre running from something, no matter how nice the neighborhood is.â
      âThatâs true. Well, walk over there and introduce yourself.â
      âI thought about doing that but I donât know. What if theyâre weird? And I just got through running. I might wanna take a shower first.â

      âBaby, just go over and say hi to them. It wonât take long. I probably wonât be getting home until very late tonight, so itâll probably be tomorrow before I can meet them.â
      âYouâre working late again, baby? Damn, thatâs the third night in a row. Iâm tired of eating delivery and takeout every night, Tisha.â
