My Top 5 Horror Practical Effect Scenes

5.    Evil Dead (1981): Pencil in the foot.

Artist: Tom Sullivan

This is a gruesome moment in film that just invaded my head for days on how real it looked. There is nothing extra fancy about it, but rather a painful realness, where you can just image it happening to you. Makes me cringe and I love it.

4.    Hellraiser's (1987): Frank

Artist: Bob Keen (makeup effects designer) and Geoffrey Portass

A combination of reverse footage and stop-motion animation. This is one of those movie-defining scenes that burns itself into your brain for the rest of your life. Nothing here is digital. This is all physical and it just feels that much more terrifying for it!

3.    The Thing (1982): Defibrillator Scene

Artist: Rob Bottin

This unforgettable sequence, has a myriad of masterful effects. Skin-crawling chain of events beginning with two severed arms and ending with one severed alien head. The amount of different practical effects for one scene is incredible!  But I think it’s the originality of the designs that make this is one of my favs.

2.    Alien (1979): Chestburster Scene

Artists: Brian Johnson & Nick Allder

One of the most terrifying effects to me! Shot in one take using four cameras, the “chest-bursting” effect was created using an artificial torso filled with real cow’s blood and intestines, through which the alien puppet was shoved by a guy below the table (a total of three separate puppets were used in different portions of the scene).

1.    An American Werewolf in London (1981): Werewolf Transformation

Artist Rick Baker

The “Outstanding Achievement in Makeup” category at the Academy Awards was created specifically as a result of the amazing transformation sequence. The use of a combination of prosthetics and fake animatronic body parts comes across so flawlessly on screen that watching it causes you to viscerally experience the character’s agony. Nearly 35 years later, this remains the greatest werewolf transformation in cinema history.
