Be gentle. Fill yourself up with love instead of hate. Fill yourself up with art, books, knowledge, experiences. Surround yourself with people who have nothing but love to give. These things are important. They will help you learn how to love.

The Importance of the Brain Vacation
So yesterday, I bought a fish tank. I probably should not have, because it ate up all my free time yesterday, and it was expensive, and it’s going to take regular maintenance until I decide I no longer want fish. It was silly, and unnecessary, and maybe a little weird, and it doesn’t even have fish in it yet, but I love it.
My fish tank is a good example of what I like to call a brain vacation. As a musician, my life revolves about 98% of the time around music. For the most part, that’s awesome! I love music! And yet.
Did you know, if you spend literally all your time doing something, you will begin to hate it?
It’s true. I spent a good chunk of this summer just not doing anything. I did nothing. And while for the first like two and a half months it was great, by the end I was definitely beginning to go a little stir-crazy. It was like a little irritating rub that turned into a blister of “I haven’t done anything but this in 75 days I am SO BORED.” Now combine that idea of a constant irritation - the process of doing something constantly so that you never get any relief, a blister of irritation and boredom - with the constant high-level stress of being in college. That’s a really, really good recipe for a meltdown, for a burnout, or even just for a weekend of making really really bad, not-fun decisions.
This is where brain vacations come in. A brain vacation is anything that you enjoy doing that is just completely unrelated to your primary Thing. Music is my primary thing. My fish tank is about as unrelated to opera as you can get. The thirteen plants in my room that I fuss over way too much? Unrelated to music. They are something that I can do that help me to remember that I am not a music robot. They are my brain vacation.
The best thing about brain vacation things is that they are really good for giving you a distraction, essentially. Tumblr is not a brain vacation for me, because 90% of the people I follow are also college students or musicians - super related to my Thing! That’s not relaxing, even if it is entertaining. But learning how to kick-start the nitrogen cycle in my fish tank? That’s unrelated, and kinda neat! I went on a research binge, y'all, I know so much about fish tanks now. And that’s what I needed yesterday. I needed to Not be Doing the Thing.
So don’t feel guilty if you have a brain vacation day. Spending some time completely absorbed in something “irrelevant” to whatever your Thing is, that’s necessary. It’s not shameful. It taking care of yourself and giving your mental stress blisters time to heal. So go take some time to go on a vacation, you’ll probably feel better.
(I would not recommend fish tanks though, tbh - they are really are Unfortunately Expensive.)
“Why do i feel bad?” Checklist
First of all: You don’t feel bad because you are bad. Right now you may feel worthless or useless or empty but i promise, you are wonderful. You are a precious human being and i love you.
Checklist:
- Did i take my medication?
- Did i drink enough water?
- Did i eat enough food?
- Did i sleep enough?
- Did i have too much caffeine?
Dehydration, hunger, lack of sleep, a missed dose of medication and caffeine can all have a negative impact on your mood. Take care of your body and you will probably feel better mentally as well!
- Did i move enough?
- Did i move too much?
Both too much and too little exercise can have a negative impact on your mood. Think about your own specific need and ability to move, note that it’s not about “getting fit” or “losing weight” now, it’s just about the amount of exercise your body requires to feel comfortable. If you had too little, take a walk. dance to your favorite song or just do a few nice stretches. You probably don’t feel like it but it may pull you out of your sadness! If you had too much, listen to your body and allow yourself to rest. Exercise is important but too much doesn’t benefit you, it just exhausts you, physically and sometimes even mentally. You deserve a break!
- Did i have enough enjoyable social interactions today?
- Did i overstimulate myself with too much social interactions?
Both loneliness and overstimulation can be draining. Think about the last few hours of your life. Did you talk to others in any way? If not, try to talk to someone, even if it’s “just” a call, a text or a message on tumblr. Don’t feel like humans? Cuddle your pet or even a stuffed animal. If you did, did you enjoy those conversations? Not every social interaction is uplifting. Maybe you also had to talk to many people or people you don’t feel comfortable with. In those cases, it might be helpful to isolate yourself for a while and just spend some time with yourself.
- Did something upsetting happen recently?
- Did something upsetting happen a long time ago but it still bothers me?
Both is valid. It may help to talk about it, to friends, families, people who went through something similar, a doctor, a therapist. It may also help to write it down, so you get it out of your head. Creating art in any form may also help you. Distractions (such a reading, watching funny videos, taking a bubble bath, listening to music, basically anything that makes you think about something else without harming you or others) are a good idea for a short-term fix but if you find that the bad feeling doesn’t fade away even with distractions and you can’t stop thinking about it, it’s better to talk to someone about it.
- None of those apply/I did all of these but i still feel bad!
Sometimes you just feel bad for no reason. That’s okay. If this is a new feeling, you may just want to wait it out. Everyone has bad days but even the worst day will pass. If this isn’t a new feeling and you’ve felt bad for two weeks or longer now, please talk to a professional. Prolonged negative emotions may be a sign of a health problem.

rosemary Also known as compass weed, incensier, and pilgrim’s flower, tame rosemary thrives best when a woman is in charge of the household. It is an excellent incense and purifier; when burned it drives away evil spirits and negativity, and when stored next to other dried herbs cleanses them of negative influence. It is most popularly used within the household. Rosemary grown, or dried and hung, by a doorpost will deter would-be thieves. When hung in twigs above a bed it is also a protection against spirits, and was used in Ireland to protect a child from being stolen by faeries. Due to its cleansing nature, it also aids to dispel grief, anger, hatred, and bitterness. If a person’s heart is a cold one, burn a sprig of rosemary in a candle whilst thinking of that person. Or, to receive the answer to a question, take seven sprigs of rosemary and burn over charcoal whilst asking what you wish to know.
