ââŚHuh. Guess that makes you more of a talker than a whisperer.â But did the guy mean that he was an animal-whisperer in general, or that he could more or less understand animals as if they were speaking words? He vaguely entertained the idea of introducing him to Katsura. Or maybe see what Taka had to say about Simon.
âIâve got a couple birds at home. Iâve had a cockatiel for several years already, and recently I also got a budgie and a rooster. Someone justâŚgave us a rooster. And we kept it.â
âReally? Thatâs so cool! I wish people gave me birds, but... I can at least seek them out myself, nyaha!â He grinned a little. He would love to keep a bird as a pet, but heâd been discouraged from the idea numerous times. He didnât really get why, but there was no use trying to protest. He supposed he could always try again under the pretense of keeping a bird around rather than a Risen...

Where did it all go wrong?âŚ
Today had started off as any other day. Tharja had woken up at the stroke of dawn, returning to her tent from another night of stalking observing Robin. Contrary to popular beliefs, she had a list of her own personal chores in which she spends a rigorous amount of time to complete - hexing was simply a pastime.
It consisted of inspecting and restocking supplies, mainly ingredients for her various spells. Organizing copious lore, rebinding tomes, cataloging her collection of artifacts, cooking (for Robin) - the list goes on. And yet, she does all of these things in a span of a few hours and still manages to find the time to create and test new hexes (and stalking Robin).Â
Unwavering and relentless dedication, to say the least. Tharja may have been many things, but idle certainly wasnât one of them.
That afternoon, she had been concocting a new hex where her victimâs cognitive senses - sight, sound, touch, and taste - would be momentarily disabled. It would be quite useful in battle, buying her some time to cast other spells or distracting certain foes for one of her companions to finish off. Before she could collect its essence and store it into her tome she needed to test it on someone.
Whilst attempting to collect an empty tome from the shelf, using a makeshift ladder composed of various novels and journals, one of the books tore and shifted her weight causing her to plummet onto the ground - but, not before tipping over various containers of ingredients into her cauldron, THEN said cauldron slipping off the table. As soon as its contents touched her flesh, a giant puff of smoke had engulfed her. When it finally dispersed, she would find that the world around her had grown vastly - but in truth, she had shrunken. Her body reverted to one from her youth⌠Tharja was nothing more than an adolescent now.
Initially, she had attempted to reverse the spell but come to find her powers had waned considerably. Desperate to revert back to her former glory, she concealed herself using a hooded cloak and quietly maneuvered through the campgrounds. She was discreet, as not to allow anyone to see her in such a miserable state until she had reached Henryâs tent. Once she had successfully entered the premises, her violet coloured gaze lifted towards the other dark mage.
â⌠YouâŚâ She began to speak in her tiny voice. Tharja was hesitant to ask for assistance due to her pride, but seeing how there were no other alternatives she had to suck it up. â⌠I need your⌠help,â she finally confessed.
The day had been relatively normal for Henry -- in his own definition, at least. Earlier in the day heâd been fighting off some Risen, both for fun and to protect his fellow comrades. He hardly acknowledged the latter reason, at least not consciously. The thrill of a good kill was all that mattered!
Regardless, the mage was exhausted after the battle and had spent the time before retiring to his tent playing with the local animals. They were much more willing to converse with him than most of the people around here. Not that he minded; sometimes the company of the creatures was preferred.Â
When the now much tinier mage entered his tent, heâd been reading up on some new spells that he wanted to test out. He always leaned towards the ones that would give the most gruesome outcomes. He was invested in a particular one when he was addressed, very nearly startling him. The noise came was a surprise to him -- it sounded so young, but it was distinctly Tharjaâs. He peered over to where it came from, unable to hold back a laugh at the sight.
âOh, man, look at you...!â He put his tome down, moving over closer to her. Of course he was going to help -- as cute as it was, he couldnât leave her in that miserable state. He wasnât that cruel. But he couldnât stop laughing. âWhat did you do?â
fan-tasticfour:
Ooh, sweet! He had no idea who this other guy was, but if he was waving with a wide grin from so far away then he had to be really friendly, right? Especially since he seemed to get along with birds. And crows were scary smart, too.
âHeeeeeelloodle! Heehee, the crows all seem to really like you. Are you some kind of bird-whisperer?â
âNyaha! I guess you could call it that!â Henry stroked the crowâs feathers lightly, being gentle and kind with it. He really should ask this crow for itâs name -- it seemed to really like him, and it hung out with him more for the rest of itâs flock. But that could wait for now.
âI can talk to animals! But birds -- crows, especially -- are my favorite.â
âOne for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl and four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told.â (Some old, british childrenâs rhyme about magpies that has been stuck in my mind for years.)
I saw a lot of Henry for inktober and jumped on the train- but instead of the usual crows and ravens, I decided to give some attention to a bird that gets lot less appreciation than its older brothers of the ravens- the magpie!
So, well, Henry is trying to teach his little friend how to sing, but even though crows, ravens and magpies belong to the group of singing birds, which contains robins, blue tits and blackbirds too, they are not really the most talented singers.

Henryâs focus on the animal was both endearing and curious. There being no mention of the rider was not lost on Libra, but he tucks it away for later consideration. Emitting a visible sigh of relief, his body laxes as if a very tangible weight had been lifted.Â
âGods be praised. Thank you, Henry.â Libra pauses, fingers clasping at his belt while ashen brows knit together. ââŚthere is little time to waste.â The makeshift stable set up in camp was not a distant walk. It was quiet, mostly due to the approaching evening hour. Soon the horses would be fed and closed in for good. Libra points to a piebald standing taller than the others, whose nostrils flare almost immediately upon eye contact. He paws at the ground, throwing his head twice in obvious agitation parallel to the wooden stake he was tied to. âIâmâŚnot sure what is to be done. He bites, so please be careful.â
âNo need to worry about me, Libra! Iâve got this!â Encouraging the other man to stay back a little, Henry slowly approached the horse, one hand extended for him to smell. He wasnât going to make any attempt to touch him-- not yet, anyways. Once he was a little calmer, he could soothe the beast further.
âHey, buddy.... Are you doing okay...? Iâm not gonna hurt you, I just wanna talk for a little bit!â His voice softened a little bit to speak to the creature, not wanting to further disturb him. He finally stopped moving with his hand a few inches from the horseâs reach. Close enough to smell, and far enough not to get bitten.Â
âMy nameâs Henry. I heard what happened to your master-- Iâm so sorry...â
litanee:
That causes him to blink, both grateful and baffled. It had been such an unlikely chanceâand yet, it might prove fruitful still. âItâs the soldierâs horse. Her peers say theyâre exceptionally close, but the animal wonât let anyone approach him. Iâve tried calming him myself, but I regretfully have little way withâŚâ his voice trails off, embarrassed. Since his encounter with Minerva, it was something Libra had worked on in his free time. There was obviously still much to learn.
âIf they could somehow reunite before the riderâs passingâŚI feel in my heart that would do some good.â
âAww... That poor thing...â The struggles of animals touched his heart more than humans. He felt that the poor creatures deserved to live a wholesome, happy life. He didnât get a lot of time around the horses, so this would be a good opportunity for him to build a bond with one of them.
âI can try to talk to him! I think Iâll be able to get him to calm down... He must really be distressed, the poor thing...â
litanee:
Henry certainly had a gift forâŚ.startling him, when he was otherwise not easily startled. But he collects himself easily enough, and turns to engage his comrade. âHenry,â his tone is warm, but his expression tenses when he realizes the context of the question. Though they both shared a certainâŚnumbness to bloodshed, heâd never quite understand his friendâs fascination. âIâm afraid so,â he swallows, obviously troubled. âI donât think she will last; I only wish I could do something more for her painâŚâ Libra was surprised the soldier had lasted as long as she did. Attempting not to let the toils of war weigh him down too visibly, he runs an anxious hand through his hair.Â
âYouâyouâre able to speak to animals? I heard rumor in camp, but forgive me if it was only that.â
Although he was a little more curious about the soldierâs condition in question, he easily dropped it for the new topic. Animals were practically his specialty -- other than killing. The crows, especially, were practically his closest friends aside from the ones heâd made in his army.
âOf course I can!â A little laugh followed his words. âIâm real good with animals! Why do you ask?â
â â @litanee
âLiii~bra!â Henry eagerly bounded over to the monk. He loved having conversations with the other man, regardless of the topic. Libra was an interesting guy! And he was just generally pretty cool. But what heâd started to get an interest in was Libraâs task as a healer. The guy had surely seen some nasty wounds, and Henry wanted to know everything.
âSeen anything super gory lately?â
â â @fan-tasticfourâ
A little laugh left Henry as crows flew around him, one hand outstretched to encourage one to land on it. The creatures were good company when the mage couldnât get attention from anyone else, and they all seemed to really like him too! At the presence of another person, some of them fluttered off, catching his attention. He didnât recognize the man at all, but waved brightly from where he was seated with his free hand, a wide grin on his face.
âLook, birdie-- we might have another friend!â He beamed at the single crow that was left.
â â @draconicaxprinceps
âWhoa...â Now that was someone heâd never seen before. He knew a lot of people, but heâd never seen a lady like this before. She must not be from around here...! Now, of course, Henry knew very well that tailing someone never worked out well, but... He was going to do it anyways.
of-invisible-ties:
âOh, no! I donât like those shifty eyes, Henry!â
âYouâre mulling over how you can smuggle in those putrid parts, arenât you!? For the love of the gods, Iâd rather you keep them away! Who knows what manner of bugs their stench will attract?â
âAww-- you caught me!â He gave a little laugh, a wide smile on his lips. âIf I clean âem, the bones arenât gonna smell! No little buggies will want âem at that point.â
Maribelle immediately scuttled back, clearly appalled by the dislodged rotting flesh. Somehow retaining her elegant poise, she pinched her nose with two careful fingers. What a terrible odorâŚ.
âDecomposing flesh belongs in the ground from whence it returned to!â
âWhy ever would you want to keep it, Henry? Cleansed or not, I believe you should return those bones to whatever poor skeleton you plucked them from! And quickly!â
âAwww, okay...â Looks like he was going to have to find a place to hide them. He could always come back for them later, when no one was paying attention to his whereabouts... Yeah-- thatâd work!
   starter call!
âMingling with foul corpses yet again, I see.â
âHmph! Have you neglected the putrid stench thatâŚthing is letting loose?â Maribelle wrinkled her nose in distaste carefully averting her eyes away from the vermin. She could not bear to look at whatever Risen part Henry had taken a recent fancy to. âDiscard it at once, please. Far, far away, might I add!â
âBut look at the bones!! Iâve never seen one decomposed this much!!â Henry beamed, crouching back down to get a closer look at the monsterâs skeleton. There was still rotting flesh hanging off of it, but he hardly cared. It was pretty. âIf I clean âem, can I keep âem? Please?â He was probably going to do it anyways, but thatâs besides the point.
