Paul Cézanne was born on this day in 1839. The shadows on the body of The Bather share the colors of the air, land, and water, rather than shifting to black, as classical and Renaissance artists had done. Cézanne’s work reflected a modern sensibility, incorporating the new understanding of vision and light developed by the #Impressionists. The Bather is on view in our 5th floor Collection Galleries.
