(420Times) Today U.S. Representatives Earl Blumenauer and Jared Polis introduced legislation that would allow states to be free from federal interference if they choose to legalize marijuana and would also create a taxation and regulatory framework for marijuana at the federal level.
Rep. Blumenauer’s office also put together a comprehensive report on the history of cannabis and the reasons for marijuana law reform called “The Path Forward” that can be viewed here.
Rep. Polis (D-CO) introduced the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2013, which would remove marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act and establish a system in which marijuana is regulated similarly to alcohol at the federal level. It would also remove marijuana from the jurisdiction of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and place it under the purview of a renamed Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana, Firearms, and Explosives.
Rep. Blumenauer (D-OR) introduced the Marijuana Tax Equity Act, which would create a federal excise tax on the sale of marijuana similar to that imposed on the sale of alcohol.
