The idea that companies make dolls for “very little money” has been debunked by artists a million times over. Doll production is quite literally a process. Hand sculpting, engineering, molding, and casting take so much time and money.
For the resources (which no duh cost money) you would need AT LEAST 12 tools to start with, which I’m low balling for your sake (be grateful). With a lot of this tools being things that recasters would never touch, like sculpting clay to actually make your master cast, aluminum foil/styrofoam for your doll base, wooden balls for your joints, a saw/scalpel to open up your master cast, a literal project blueprint, etc etc the list goes on and on.
For a company that makes dolls regularly these are tools that will never end up on a recaster budget list.
That’s ONLY if the artist gets it perfect the first time. From the dimensions to the posing, if an artist makes a mistake from the beginning and needs to scrap certain parts then that’s just money wasted with production stock depleted and needing to be filled. Something that recasters don’t bother with.

And don’t you even dare type out Volks because they make $50 mil annually from selling bjds, dollfies, figures, kits, model planes, tools and materials, and magazines. All of that cutting their doll income down substantially.
Hideyuki Shigeta isn’t part of any billionaire boys club and Volks is the most well established company out there. No other company can boast those numbers so where are the billionaires at???
Also lemme see the sweat shops that Luts, Volks, Fairyland, Soom, Bluefairy, Dollmore, Ringdoll, Dollpamm, Xaga doll, Asleep Eidolon, Angelphilia, Leekeworld, FOVEO, Iplehouse, Little Monica, Nino doll, Only doll, Switch, Sadol, Dikadoll, Darak, Bimong, Atelier Monomi, Lillycat, Youpla, Villitunes, Soul doll, Migidoll, Dollzone, Dollshe, Chica Bonita, Angellstudio, Loongsoul, Maskcat, Peakswood, Miyadoll, RamCube, Sio2, Summerbird, Supia, or literally any other bjd company are hiding. I’ll even take an indie artist with an unsafe factory if you got it!
But maybe it’s more likely that since most bjd companies are from asian you think that that automatically makes their production lines unsafe, unlike, idk unlicensed, unregulated, illegitimate fake doll factories.

Oh so you’re a tourist huh? Like, you just simply have never participated in the bjd hobby??
Like, you’re talking about large companies but literally anyone in the hobby, even people from the anti artist side can tell you that recasters steal from E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E. No one is too small for them to take from.
Lillycat sculpts her own dolls. She also inspects and ships every single doll she sells. She’s not making millions on get work. Period. But being a solo artist doesn’t spare her from having her work stolen from under here.
Sio2 is yet another small artist who got her start on taobao. After enough people started paying for HER work she was able to start selling internationally. Another artist who isn’t making millions but is still having her work stolen.
Recasters have done this time and time again. Whatever zillion dollar company you’re mad at falls right down at the shoulders of small companies and single artists.
You already said what you meant in the beginning. You believe that dolls made from companies for “very little money” that end up getting recasted “aren’t a problem”. Like that’s what you believe from top to bottom. Like, yeah you threw in that UWUillionaire comment but you already said what you felt.
Bulk resin can land you anywhere from $100-$500 depending on how many gallons of it you buy so that already flies in the face of your “made for cheap claim”. And I’ve already mentioned how much companies spend on production equipment that recasters simply don’t buy so I won’t bring it up again. But even ignoring all that, recasters genuinely DO NOT take into account for labor when they sell their products.
A lot can be said for Asia’s toxic workaholic culture, but america is no better. Large companies maintain a power imbalance between workers, management, and owners. But the same can be said for mom and pop shops. There’s nothing that lends credence to the belief that recast businesses don’t participate in those type of power imbalances or that the employees don’t experience their own type of work place cruelty. As if an illegitimate business that forges paper work for their unauthorized knock off is actually far above using subpar materials with unsafe labor in a hostile work environment. Please!!
The shops that are selling their full doll, with their wig, and their outfit, with their faceup is SEVERELY underselling their labor. With the casting, assemblage, wig fitting, sewing, and face painting it should NOT come out to be that little. It’s extremely disrespectful to the employees there to charge the way they do for their output. The pricing for rbjds come from the raw materials alone and whatever else extra to spread thin for employee paychecks.
