blackaltfans, originally blackinbandom, was created in april 2015 as a safe space for black people who identify as alternative/are in "bandom". our goal is to create a safe space to have discussions regarding being black in a mostly white scene, as well as issues that intersect with race.

hi friends, i’ve been mostly inactive for a while because, well. life happened. i graduated from college, have changed jobs a couple times, started freelancing full-time (i don’t have the energy for that, god bless those of you who do), started working full-time, and now i’m about to start a new job at a really great company that will take up a good bit of my time.

so that being said, if you want this to continue to exist, i would love for you all to keep it running bc i believe that this space needs to exist. i had a lot of hopes for what i wanted this to look like in 2014, but was never able to follow through. (same with inclusivepunk but that was bc i’m easily overwhelmed when it comes to emails.) 

what i’m looking for is one or two people who can commit to posting once or twice a week at minimum. it would be a volunteer position bc this is like a 2 hour commitment each week, tops. i’d still handle instagram separately, but if you’re interested in doing that over this, let me know! message me if you’re down. 

additionally: if you’re a graphic designer with commissions open, get at me.

With fest season coming to ahead, it's time we start creating spaces on rosters for smaller bands with marginalized people (people of color, non-binary, women, femmes, queer folx). This is a small incomplete list of bands people have suggested they would like to see on these fests. The point was originally smaller bands or bands that don't have histories of doing abusive or shitty things, so please consider that as well.

So there have been a lot of great tours announced, but most of them have been a 5 band lineup made up of all white men. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that - some of these lineups have incredible openers who deserve that exposure! - it’s unacceptable to see this from bands that claim to support inclusivity. This doc was created by Bee Batya, shared by Carly Comando (from Slingshot Dakota). Support marginalized artists, support DIY, support your scene, etc.

Hi. Long time no talk. Let’s catch up.

1. This is very much still a thing, just more active on Twitter. (Follow the acct here.) I (Carina) am currently in my last semester of undergrad, so that’s my #1 priority right now. Because of that, I have little time to even commit to the sites I currently write for, let alone attempt to start my own. 

If this is something that you’re very much interested in and passionate about, reach out to @DEFENDGlRLS, @girlsagainst, @safersceneorg, @AVFTI, GBTRS, #BWinRock, and other social media initiatives and non-profit organizations that are doing great things! 

2. I really want to change the site name. I hate the word diversity (it doesn’t mean anything lol) and the impact vs. intent thing is really forcing my hand on this. If an account called “diverse scene” followed me, I’d probably block them. ~Diversity~ in music is being talked about more, but it’s never been something that I’ve ever wanted to only focus on, you know? There’s a fine line between talking about the importance of representation and further contributing to the marginalization of musicians who are already underrepresented. [Marginalized identity] isn’t a genre. Female fronted is not a genre. (I hate that phrase.) Queer is not a genre. etc. etc.
