Slawta - “Mango” (2021) (feat. RudeBoy Shug)
More rap songs should be written like soca songs. I love the interpolation of Ballgreezy’s “Shone” that RudeBoy Shug, who definitely has flows of his own, throws in the middle of his verse. I can just imagine hearing Desloc with a verse at the end of this one.

RudeBoy Shug - “You Got It” (feat. Opalocka Nutt) (2019)
Opalocka Nutt has entered the running for best rap name. This sound just reminds me of South Florida about a decade ago when Grind Mode and Jube’s jook anthems were the jams at every party.
This track is off of a project where Rudeboy Shug’s is sometimes off-kilter and sometimes too predictable. But he shows exciting potential on “Basic” where he somehow transitions flows from a street-gospel motivator to a patois-laced spastic rude bwoy by the end.
Mike Smiff - “Valentine’s Day” (2019)

Soldier Kidd - “Fish Tank” (2018)
This is the first time I’ve heard Soldier Kidd really snap on a track. On “Fish Tank” the energy level is high the entire time but keeps the song interesting by simply switching up flows throughout.
Previously he was somewhat notable for sounding moderately similar to Kodak Black. Currently he’s popularly known for being falsely accused of killing XXXTentation
Mirror Monk - “Do My Thang” (2018)
Mirror Monk on a lo-fi beat feels like a new approach and I’m digging it.
DJ Screach, Radio Jamez, Uncle Al Jr - “Pacjam” (2018)
2018 is going to be a great year if we get more new age Miami Bass tracks like this. This is an awesome grouping of South Florida DJs.
DJ Screach builds on his hit party track “One - Two”. Radio Jamez, previously N.M.B. Stunnaz’s DJ, has made a name for himself on the party circuit. But the name that stands out for me is Uncle Al Jr., the son of Miami legend DJ Uncle Al.
The drum sample is the same from Sam Sneak & Ice Berg’s "Here We Go” from 2014 and I already talked about the importance of that sound to Miami. The name of this song comes from the Pac Jam teen club Uncle Luke started in the 80s.
But even without the history this track just bangs and will likely be in rotation throughout the year.

Donny Banz (feat. IAmDoogie & Fatboy Rhymer) - “Here I Am” (2017)
Fun track that just feels right with a slight Caribbean tinge.
Kidd Adamz - "R2R" (feat. Kiddo Marv) (2016) So awhile back I came across this song “La La La” from a rapper I wasn’t too familiar with so I kind of put it on the back burner. Looking back, it's a little rough but the flow stands out by being kind of different and cool. I was pretty busy with life stuff and barely posting at the time so I never got to write about it. Nowadays that rawness is actually what really stands out the most. Fast forward to this evening when Kidd Adamz's “R2R” flies across my feed and I’m immediately vibing to the sing-rap hook. I first heard of Kidd Adamz on “Str8 Lyk Dat”, a collab with CB and Reese Head from 2011, which still bangs and was incredibly underappreciated. Unfortunately, in-video interlude (???) with the cop that interrupts his verse doesn’t help Kidd Adamz immediately stand out. 5 years later there’s a shift in style that’s very Miami and not Miami at the same time. Kidd Adamz laces the first verse of “R2R” with a style that is hot right now but with content that is more aspirational than cocky as compared to other colored-haired dread head young rappers. “I want to know see it feels burning up thousands of bills. Then make it back like it’s nothing to me. I want to stunt like it’s normal to me.” Kidd Adamz and Kiddo Marv are having a lot of fun in the video for “R2R”. They ride recklessly down 7th Ave in Miami. They do the running man as they run to the racks like the hook yearns. Kidd Adamz spits in 4 different voices including the hook. This is fun music! The music being fun makes it very Miami like Uncle Look and jook music. "Strangers" is another recent Kidd Adamz track that has a distinctly Miami vibe of dark minimalism (think Kodak Black and early Ice Berg) but an aesthetic that is on trend for today’s weirdo street rappers.
Mike Smiff - “Make Em Say Ughh” (feat. Ice Berg) (2015)
Like most other areas in the South, Miami had an affinity for the No Limit sound. Mike Smiff and Ice Berg’s ode to those days is hype enough to put you back in the basketball gym on top of a tank but polished to show their own styles.
Smiff dropped a solid tape, All Gas No Brakes, late this summer with some legitimately dope flows over very stick-drill Miami beats like “Tha World” and “Been Doin Dis.” Virtually every rapper has to be cocky but Mike Smiff’s commanding voice gives off a certain confidence that makes his street stories more gripping.
Vandam Bodyslam - "Careless" (2015) "We got a problem with our government. It's clear that it's trust. But our government got its own problem: It's clear that it's us."
Bruno Mali - "My Connect" (2014)
Previously known as Young Spook, Bruno Mali takes us to his connect in Cuba via some kind of "Triggerman"/"Drag Rap" remake.
Bruno Mali has a distinct voice, which should help him as a rapper, and subtle lisp, which probably shouldn't. But both kind of work in his favor though because his delivery has a different dimension that makes it more gripping.
Either way this has some ride out value so enjoy.
CBGz 2Thugz - "Try Me" (2012)
This is like 2 years old. Missed this somehow.
Kodak Black - “No Flocking” (2014)
Slang in South Florida is as dynamic as the people who live there. Terms for drugs aren’t exempt from this. Flockin (in the context I’ve heard it) that Kodak Black criticizes here is lacing blunt with pretty much anything other than weed.
Despite being from Ft. Lauderdale area, he’s usually got the high pitch voice of a Boosie and flow of alternating Cash Money artists circa 2000. But here he goes for a more subdued tone that matches this haunting beat. If nothing else it shows some strides to work on his rapping as a craft.
Kodak Black raps with enough depth that wouldn’t make you assume he’s only a teenager. That, in addition to his raps not being completely derivative of 90s screw/occult raps from other citites, makes it interesting to follow the kid.
