Black Influencers Values Part 65 with the fabulous Blue!
Describe yourself in 3 words. : I like watermelon. What was that fleeting moment in your life that catapulted you to your present self BUT certainly could have really gone the other way?: My father's sperm fertilized my mother's egg. Had they met just one month earlier or later, it wouldn't have been me! What are your morning and nightly rituals?: I can't say that I have any particular rituals. However, breakfast is important. And so is taking a bath before bedtime. I've always loved water. It relaxes me. It brings me back in sync with my primal self. I've come to some of my most transformational epiphanies while in water. 4. Who should I interview next?: Interview the oldest person you can find. Extra 20 points if they're over 100 years old. Who is your target audience and your self proclaimed niche/talent/gifts?: Since I started making art for the purpose of sharing, I've taken the post-modernism approach. This means that instead of targeting an audience, my art creates the audience. Nevertheless, I appreciate anyone who takes the time to appreciate my art. That's a special thing. I've traveled to a lot of places and have connected with many audiences. No two audiences are alike, even if their demographics are similar. Indoor performances are different from outdoor performances. Small venues are different from large venues. Some of my best performances were for 2 or 3 people in a living room. People like music and I like playing for them. My self-proclaimed niche/talent/gift is seeing the bigger picture. I consider it a superpower that helps me to regulate my responses to stressful situations. What did the young you envision, see, think or was told; to make you impact people the way you do? The young me wanted to be a nursery rhyme record. Then, she wanted to be a surgeon. Then, she wanted to be a physical therapist. Then, she wanted to be an astronaut. Then, she wanted to be a doctor of philosophy. She wanted to make her family and community proud. Then, she grew up. After experiencing losses, failures, disappointments, the death of Michael Jackson, life, and reality; I decided that I just wanted to live well according to my own personal value system. I want to enjoy my days. Joy, happiness, peace, love, passion, energy, fun, simplicity, generosity, compassion, and food make my life worth living. I make fun of everything and everyone in a world where negativity is just one lazy thought away. I can see how not taking myself and the world seriously can inspire others to relax and enjoy their own life...or piss them off, depending on how attached they are to the goings on in their world. Everything everyone does impacts everyone and everything. I just hope to leave more love and less anger in my path as I move forward. What is your favorite book, song and quote? Why? Book: At a recent Dharma Convention (Dharma is one of the 3 jewels of Buddhism and refers to the Buddha's teachings), I discovered Grasshopper on the Road by Arnold Lobel. It's a children's book about a grasshopper who meets different insects and animals on the road. The various creatures have diverse and comical assortments of goals and afflictions, yet, the grasshopper continues on his journey without becoming attached to any of their issues. Song: Have you ever been at a party and the DJ played your favorite song and you thought your night was made...and then the DJ followed it with your other favorite song and you thought the night couldn't get any better...and then the DJ mixed a blend of 5 of your favorite songs and you went completely unconscious and danced like you never danced before? Well, that's my life. I love good music and I hear new favorite songs all the time. Quote: "The good thing about never being able to pull off the conventionality act: It frees you to do so much stuff without damaging your reputation." My Witchy Godmother, Jonathan Sanders, told me this once when I was lamenting being "different". This quote gave me the appropriate level of perspective that continues to soothe my ego when I'm feeling out of place. Sometimes, people tell me what they think of me. Often, their thoughts leave me with a smile. People expect me to be weird. I don't think I'm weird, but if people expect me to be weird; then nothing I do will ever shock them. And if nothing I do shocks people, then I'm free to do all kinds of crazy shit without inciting resistance. 8. Name two things you want to tell the world. 1) Do it while you're young. 2) You're never too old to do it or do it again. Are you a saver or a shopper? What are your financial strategies? I'm a chronic investor. Saving is only as powerful as the return. Compound interest is everything. EVERYTHING! I started investing when I was 8 or 9 years old. First, with money market accounts at credit unions. Then, I moved up to Certificates of Deposit (CDs). In college, I learned about mutual funds and stocks. And mostly, I invested in myself: my education, my art, my land, my relationships. I asked and continue to ask a lot of questions and I try to remain disciplined, yet open to new ideas. Nothing is fool proof, but a little purpose and passion can go a long way. I also am an environmental minimalist, so I don't have to spend a lot of money to make my life work. I recently asked a dentist, "How do you make lots and lots of money?" He replied, "You often can't control how much you make, but you can control how much you spend." Do your key values and life missions speak first to your race and then the world? vice versa? Or that is not a thought of yours as you live day to day? Overall, I believe in love and the Universal Law of Reciprocity. What I or anybody else looks like does not affect the standard of love that I expect from myself in all situations and with all living creatures. Still, I have my moments. For example, I will kill a mosquito without hesitation. When you have something that's super important to you; what do you tell yourself to get pumped? It's not that serious, so relax. Name 5 people that you know that embody instrumental traits children should emulate. I don't think children should emulate anyone. I think they should be themselves and follow their hearts wherever their hearts may lead. Name 5 people that you know that are Powerhouses in their industries. I think that everyone who takes the initiative to fearlessly create is a powerhouse. Do you have a website or business name? I've recently started a new blog: *thebluedoctor.blogspot.com * It's the blog that I've finally grown into. My goal with this blog is to bring up very important life issues that we all deal with or have dealt with at some point and discuss them from a perspective of seeing the bigger picture. I hope that people might read and see that they are not alone. Also, I have a book entitled *The Tao of Pimpin'*, which can be found in paperback through Bailey Girls Publishing, at Yeyo Arts Collective in St. Louis, MO and at BlackStar Books in New Orleans, LA and on Amazon Kindle. Find my music on CDBaby and Spotify. Visit http://bluefolktronica.webs.com for links to this and many other of my creative exploits. Thank you for interviewing me. I had fun answering these questions. Love, Blue

After traveling from Ecuador to Portland, OR, I am making my final stop in my home town of St. Louis, MO before heading back to Hawaii. While I'm in the Lou, I want to share with you some of the things I've learned in my life and travels. During the hardest times, we find out who we really are. Through cultivating simplicity in a world that gets more complex every day, we can see ourselves more clearly and learn to find peace in the fire. I will be signing copies of my most recent book, The Tao of Pimpin', a folk tale by Blue. The Tao of Pimpin' is an edgy satire that teaches the art of simplicity in the fire. Through synthesizing the ancient wisdom of Lao Tsu's Tao Te Ching with the oldest profession, pimpin', this exploration of the human game is brought to life in a story that challenges expectations and commands exploration. 30% of proceeds from book sales will go towards programming at Yeyo Arts, dedicated to the creative empowerment of women and families. 50% will be going towards The Contemplation Camp, a nature immersion retreat for women creatives, located on the Big Island of Hawaii. I'll be spending the rest haphazardly...probably on whiskey. Please join me Tuesday, May 24, 5-7:30pm at Yeyo Arts for Unlocking Simplicity, an evening of simple reminders from The Tao of Pimpin'. Refreshments will be provided. Special thanks to the Yeyo Arts community, Bailey Girls Publishing, and everyone who continues to support the arts. I look forward to seeing you, fam. Jazz was birthed in New Orleans and is considered to be “one of America’s original art forms.” Although it was created before Louis Armstrong was born, he had such an impact on the way people composed, played, and listened to jazz; he is accepted by many as its “founding father.” - Click here for more. 21 Swingin’ Book Selections for Jazz Appreciation Month Read Now BCBA Author Spotlight: Rita Williams-Garcia Read Now BCBA: May Book Releases Read Now Copyright © 2016 Black Children's Books and Authors (BCBA), All rights reserved. Click here to view the full post in your browser Black Healer's Guild May Yoga Challenge – Love Yo Body Via @yogabybiola Oh, the month of May, the time where beach body idealism lurks around every corner. I’ve fallen victim to self-criticism during spring and summer, especially as I’ve gotten older and my body has changed. What I’ve come to find is that negative talk does not serve me because it only perpetuates more negative self-talk . I don’t know about you but I’m not interested in spending another spring/summer with a head full of self-deprecating opinions about what my body is or isn’t. You can miss me with that shit. I’d rather love on myself as I am and see where that leads. Want to join me? I’ve teamed up with Black Healers’ Guild, your one-stop shop for natural healers and holistic practitioners from African descent, to bring you this body-loving beginner yoga challenge focused on promoting positive body awareness during the month of May and beyond. That includes 31 yoga poses to help you love your body more by understanding how it works for you. Throughout the month of May, a new pose will be posted every day on yogabybiola.com and blackhealersguild.com. Join the body-positive conversation by commenting and sharing your reflections here and on the yogabybiola.com website for a chance to win a very fabulous grand prize! The more you comment, the better your chances of winning. We’ll announce the winner at the end of the month. Remember to comment on challenge posts! Last but not least, share photos of you and your challenge poses with the community via Instagram, Twitter or Facebook with hashtagging of the hashtag is to keep the conversation alive and the support flowing. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and share your reflections when you post your images. Below I’ve posted some example reflection questions you can ask yourself. Example Reflection Questions I enjoyed
