“I do,” Rosanna insists, giving a few, quick nods of her head. Dark eyes fix on her father, her determination and faith shining in that gaze like fire.
“I know. It can’t be any worse than what’s happening right now though and I’m handling that just fine. I can handle anything.”
She wasn’t just fine. Not really. But to admit that would be to sow more doubt into her father’s heart and she didn’t even want to entertain the idea of him resolving to leave her behind.
In truth, she was terrified - of the Black Jackets, of the guns, of the prospect of her father’s death. It was so overwhelmingly large in her mind - terrifying and dangerous - but she couldn’t allow it to weed out her determination. She had to stay with him no matter what, or she would lose everything didn’t know and couldn’t remember forever. She would forever be strange little Rosanna from another world entirely, never quite fitting in here.
The was perhaps one of the most unbearable thoughts of all.
Dustfinger studied her for a moment longer, gaze searching her own, before finally giving a nod.
“Alright,” he said softly. “I believe you can, too.”
He opened his arms, offering himself comfort just as much as he was offering it to her. While he still despised the idea of putting her in any sort of danger, he had to admit that perhaps she was right. Perhaps he had too little faith in what she could handle based simply on his own fears. She was a child, but she was a strong one. She was surely strong enough for their world.
