actually that last reblog made me think about basta/farid parallels again while doing laundry just now. i know i talked about it before at some point but lads, the similarities...

abused/neglected young boys unappreciated by the people around them

find a role model with skills/personality traits they want to emulate

latch on to said role model HARD to the point of complete idolization, despite being not necessarily being treated well (at first)

ruthless streak and certain skill for violence (remember when farid assumed they were just gonna kill basta and flatnose and basta was like "damn, we could have used that kid"? also, dustfinger making farid kill the rabbits they caught lmao)

superstitious and scared of ghosts in particular

vain

attention-seeking

hot tempered

enjoying and being (sort of kind of) good at receiving romantic attention* while not taking rejection well**

team up with some guy they cannot stand in order to reach their goals when their idol is dead which goes super well for them

terminally unable to be normal about poor dustfinger

farid easily could have turned out just like basta if he'd stayed with the robbers in his original world, with capricorn in ours or if dustfinger happened to be a different kind of person is what i'm saying

*okay, farid is a ladies' man once he grows up, we know this. but i feel i might have to defend this point a bit with basta - listen. he showers, okay? he showers and smells like mint because ONE girl told him ONE time his breath stank, it's an objective fact this man takes constructive criticism. he wears that stupid flower with his (presumably clean) button-down. cornelia funke, who hates him, did not outright call him ugly. i'm not saying he's a likeable or romantic guy but there's no way he's not getting wenches. thank you.

** okay, no need to explain basta for this one. but farid was a huge baby about it when meggie started dating doria even though he had been the one ignoring her in favor of getting dustfinger back and following dustfinger around and generally just being around dustfinger unless specifically being sent away into time-out. and i'm specifically thinking about that scene in lockdown-tcor when, at her engagement party, farid is like "damn, you really wanna have boring sex from now on forever? :/".*** get a job stay away from her-

Thinking about Farid's death again because it still makes me sick to my stomach. Meggie and Dustfinger haven't been close pretty much since he first betrayed her in Inkheart: Her trust in him has been destroyed for good, even if they have started working together again (the fact that she has reason to suspect he banged her mom can't have helped). To him, she is forever a reminder of the coward and traitor he used to be. But then Farid dies, and they both cradle his body. They both cry for him. They sit together and grieve. Dustfinger refuses to let anyone near Farid except Meggie because he knows she is the only one who loved him as much as he did. It still fucks me up to this day.

The difference between Inkheart and Inkdeath are literally insane.

The bad guy in Inkheart is like… a local mafia boss and his handful of cronies. Oh no, he put us in the animal stables and people talk about that he enjoys killing but we don’t ever see it and the worst thing he does is giving Mo a cut on the face and putting people in cages I guess.

The bad guys in Inkdeath, however, are the ruler of the land but also Death herself and we desperately fight against destiny. Every other chapter there’s a fight and people get brutally killed. We are about to scatter Mos fucking kneecaps. Mind torture while experiencing actual torture in the underwater dungeon. Everything is out to kill you but with everything going on death is kinda the least of our worries??
