and freezes, a deer in the headlights. his heart thumps loudly in his ears. bishop knows that face better than he would care to. a flood of emotions rush through him, but fear emerges as the dominant one. fear and vague sense of nostalgia he doesn’t know what to do with. dread too, of what shit he’s going to have to deal with this time. there’s a reason he avoids blue—but he can’t turn tail this time. for one, he hasn’t even paid for his damn things. bishop lowers his head again and fumbles with his wallet, hoping blue doesn’t recognize him. a fool’s wish, but give him a break. “so, uh. how much was all that again? sorry, kind of in a rush here, so…”
a sense of normalcy in a reality as distorted as his is a delicacy. giving into the deadly sin of sloth was never really his thing, so instead he finds pleasure in working; if only to delude himself into forgetting the large, ever present void in his now twisted life. stacking shelves and cashing out unassuming citizens keeps him busy. keeps him distracted from the mess he leaves back at the complex. plus, employee benefits included free ramen, so he really had no reason to pass up the opportunity.
it was quite an uneventful afternoon, just as blue likes it. no fatal dangers. no sick games. his fingers are drumming along to the beat of the song playing softly through the convenience store's speakers. the surprisingly nice playlist was only but another perk. his other hand holds his head, elbow propped on the surface for support. eyes focused blankly on the dim glow of the refrigerators lined against the far wall, not even the ring of the front door’s bell spurs his concentration. blue mumbles a half hearted welcome, too entranced in the white noise of his clear mind to bring himself to his usual cheery demeanor.
his gaze follows the back of the newcomer’s head, though not out of suspicion. in fact, the oblivious boy finds nothing out of the ordinary until an all too familiar voice breaks the monotonous beeping of the register. blue can only imagine the look on his face when his eyes finally meet that of the boy’s —ironically it was as if he’s seen a ghost; as far as blue’s concerned, the bishop before him was as good as dead. after all, he was the one who saw to it .. supposedly. a few blinks and a still fully tangible human being later, blue realizes that this isn’t just some kind of cruel mirage.
boy, is karma really a bitch.
“um, yeah. well, originally it was going to be 23,400 won but for you … 18,720 won. employee’s discount.” he says with a small laugh, albeit awkward because his mind still can’t fathom the fact that bishop was still living and breathing, wounded evidently, but very much alive.
“so, no hard feelings?” cutting to the chase, blue finds, is the most effective method for ending misunderstandings such as these —and that’s exactly what blue wants this to be, a misunderstanding. in his defense, the boy was never actively seeking to send his comrade to his death; it just happened. so he rips off the band aid, grasping onto the small sliver of hope that his former partner in crime wasn’t now his ex confidant as well.
