DA:I Dalish - omg not another mage on your way good luck we don’t have templars and magic is so very uncontrollable without them around to oppress people DA:O Dalish - Mages are super important the best and purest of us and we have enough so that it’s a competition also sometimes we’re so desperate for mages we need them sent to us like in the case of Merrill

one of the reasons i’m thoroughly disappointed with the warden arc in inquisition is that it’s a narrative non-sequitur. the origins awakening and warden’s keep dlc deal so closely with the effect of political power on grey wardens, collectively and individually, that it felt cheap and confusing for none of that build up to pay off. compare morrigan’s arc, which is also introduced in origins dlc and concludes in inquisition, and it’s doubly disappointing.
it’s easy to empathise with the warden’s perspective and sacrifice in origins. i’d come to care about the grey wardens as an order of specialised warriors struggling with their position in the political landscape of an increasingly political world. i’d seen them utilise blood magic to rebel against a tryant; i’d alongside them faced the choice of fulfilling their duty to eliminate darkspawn, or saving the civilians now under their care. it was made clear to me that political decisions and diplomacy are as important to grey warden narratives as their sacrifices and their secrets.
similarly, questlines rooted in political tension are essential to the thematic tone of inquisition. an inquisitor faced with the opportunity to give lands and/or power to the grey wardens would have been more rewarding than temporarily recruiting a handful of soldiers with their own agenda. it could have complemented the wicked eyes and wicked hearts questline and built the political landscape surrounding the inquisition to a natural climax come trespasser - as it did with morrigan’s arc.
introduced in origins dlc, teased in dragon age 2, concluding in inquisition, and carrying the aftereffects into trespasser, and forward into future games. the grey warden’s political philosophies and struggles could have shared this arc with the story of morrigan’s family and the eluvians. it could have established additional connections between games, weaved complex and enduring narratives, and substantiated the lore. instead, i’m left feeling downright insulted for caring about and respecting the grey wardens when faced with their portrayal in inquisition.

ok but like,,,, i’ve mentioned before that i believe emra’s temporary cure was the work of blood magic and well i feel like that fusing with the joining ritual has some kind of reaver-esque effects just not,,, with dragon blood but with darkspawn instead and so she’d be hypersensitive (more so than ur regular warden, and that’s actually already the case for certain wardens, as per the novels) 2 their presence but also be driven to a high frenzy in a dragonrage-esque manner -- but like,,,, as a Rogue
