Keiji Uematsu, Hand Grasp (1976)

Shown here is a series of photographs done by Japanese artist Keiji Uematsu, showing displays of what appears to be interactive objects creating shadows. The photographer then interacts with the object, creating a short movie like reel for the viewer to engage in.

I like how the individuality of the photographer and the way they interact with what appears expresses their personality, sort of like an interpersonal portrait. The way someone interacts with the object of their choice, allows the user to experience a new unique pathway in which one follows; subjected to change due to the subject.

Aline Smithson - Self & Others (2015)

Aline Smithson is an American photographer, initially starting as a fashion photographer within the New York Fashion scene in her later life she ended up focusing on fine art photographer; specifically portraiture. Her portraits are intimate yet hidden, we as viewers come along with Smithson as she explores her own life; yet still trying to reveal the hidden secrets behind every individual.

As an artist she struggles to shoot her life within the image as “herself” as she has described, and has found that doing portraits and documentation she is photographing as a separate artist; not as a family member. Although this doesn’t distract from the sense of humor and humanity that flows throughout her images; the subjects she still shoots contain themselves without the awkward camera paradox.

The reason I have chosen these images is because I believe they have a sense of hidden beauty, rather than identifying these individuals through their facial physical appearances; we get to know them for their characters and personality. This reveals an inner personal side allowing the viewer to relate to the subject, creating more of an intimate connection.
