Lucio in “The Hero of Numbani”
The book released, I read it in a few hours, and I NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT. Let it be known though that this is wholly Efi’s story, and Nicki Drayden does wonders in taking what was essentially a background NPC and turning her into what is, without a doubt, the most fully-realized Overwatch character ever. Strengths of a novel aside, Efi is a personable little girl who has a great arc of development and runs the entire gamut of emotions. She officially lordes over the rest of the cast in terms of depth right now. Even if you’re not a fan of Efi, Orisa, or Numbani, check out the book anyway because you will become so within the first few pages. With that being said, I’m still primarily Lucio fan so I feel compelled to talk about the Froggo and how he fits into all of this. If you’re a Lucio fan, still get the book and read it for yourself. He has a relatively small role in the grand scheme of the book, but it gives us the biggest amount of development he’s had since his backstory, and it’s fun to read it for yourself. If you’re not interested in reading around 190 pages to get to the good stuff, then spoilers abound:
I'm of two minds about Overwatch. On one hand, it's good that the franchise deliberately puts underrepresented peoples and character archetypes in positive positions of power and heroism. On the other, this inherent setup means the reality of each character's sociopolitical struggles on the basis of their identities is pushed aside for the sake of this idealism. This is why characters don’t make overtly racist, sexist, anti-LGBTQA+ remarks to one another, and simultaneously it’s why the omnics exist: to stand-in for bigotry in a world that must have some sort of strife.
This tug-of-war between hopeful idealism and the ignoring of real sociopolitical issues makes Overwatch both well-meaning and awkward, and the reality is thus something I explore in my own fanworks. I enjoy Blizzard's Lúcio because he's an openly black, positive social revolutionary whose body and legacy weren't destroyed in any way by white people who witnessed his feats. But Blizzard also gave him a backstory wherein he grew up in a favela, a type of neighborhood that only exists due to centuries of racism, disenfranchisement, wealth inequality, and black revolt in Brazil. Racism is, thus, as inherent to Lúcio as his music, or his skating, or Jonny Cruz.
And yet, it's background fodder. In in effort to uphold the optimism of the universe, and in a reality where the gaming community at large is hostile to the reminders of minorities' realities and Blizzard, as a corporation, will never seek to alienate that community, Lúcio nonetheless remains a non-controversial favorite, practically a feel-good meme, because you don't have to confront the racism that defines him as a character to play the game or enjoy his personality.
But right now, the United States is in the throes of a flash fire revolution not unlike what Lúcio would lead, all due to the same white supremacy that connects not just black Americans, or black Brazilians, but black people the world over.
It is unavoidable now. It cannot be pushed away. It can’t be tucked away in a little background blurb in the hero gallery. Racism is real. The police exist to enforce the protection of property and wealth at the expense of black people’s well-being. Lúcio grew up in a favela, and favelas are also a result of white supremacy. And thus, it’s very likely, Lúcio would need to have “the talk” with a young boy who is as angry as he was when he fought back.
LUCIO FANS, GATHER AROUND BECAUSE WE GOT SOME LORE.
Skate size is 42.
Sonic Amplifier has an 8 meter range.
Rejuvenescência was the song that played during the revolution.
He flosses his teeth (good frog).
Pão de queijo is his favorite food.
Apparently his navel size is public knowledge..... Huh.
Will be looking out for more in the book.
Gave Lucio a fursuit and I’m not even sorry.
Since Blizzard doesn’t want to give Lucio an animated short, I'll do it myself.
Here’s a rough board set to Synaesthesia Auditiva, the entire 36-minute album recounting Lucio’s backstory- 3 story beat panels per song. The idea was kickstarted by this older post by soar319, although I ultimately intend to try and center his motivations around the disappearance of his father. The plan is to get an animatic up and working timed and set to all of the music. Traditional animation on my own would be doable; CGI the dream ticket.
But before any of that, the story has to be pinned down. Does this read to you guys?
Oh...Uh, hello there!
(I’m always delighted when people suddenly find and like/reblog my bunnyribbit stuff. It’s such a nice surprise. Thank all you fans for your support!
I should probably open up for asks/commissions. What say you?)
Who’s gonna be tall enough to admit they’ve done this to us short folks?
In honor of the Space Jam 2 logo drop today, decided to do some fun fanart. It’s been ages since I’ve drawn a Looney Tunes character! Original photo by Kelvin Kuo.
Blizzard outdid themselves on the April Fool’s joke this year
Lucio lost his game, but Hana came to see him no matter what so everything’s alright.
Decided to redo an old pic now that I can actually draw humans. Gonna redo some of the others as well.
And why did none of you tell me I thought we were friends. xP
“C’mon! You’ve been disinfecting this one cut for like 10 minutes!” “Hush, I’m trying to save your life.”

Finally finished this puppy. I’m kinda proud of it. Will tweak it more for Artstation.
THEN I CAN FINALLY ANIMATE LIKE I SAID I WOULD.
