As Director of the National Gallery, London, Burton bought over 500 works, many of them masterpieces by Botticelli, Canaletto, van Dyck and Leonardo da Vinci, creating possibly the finest art collection in the world. Burton’s painting, ‘Meeting on the Turret Stairs’ was voted by the Irish public as Ireland’s favourite painting in 2012 from among ten works shortlisted by critics. The subject is…

Photographs like this simply amaze me. A century ago captured in a single frame. Everyone in that moment is gone. A whole new set of humans exist now. It’s mind boggling. So many people we will never know and will never know us.

Akhenaten, known before the fifth year of his reign as Amenhotep IV (sometimes given its Greek form, Amenophis IV, and meaning “Amun Is Satisfied”) It was Akhenaten who first initiated the appearance of the god, Aten, by formulating a didactic name for him. Hence, in the early years of his reign, the sun god Re-Horakhty, traditionally depicted with a hawk’s head, became identical to Aten, who was again worshipped as a god, rather than as an object associated with the sun god. 18th dynasty, 1353 - 1336 BC.
