Every now and then I see a post that's like, "oh, it's EXTRA important to tell fanfic authors you like their work, because THEY don't get paid like PROFESSIONAL authors," and it always leaves me feeling incredibly irritated.

I made $1 in royalties this month. I make about thirty cents a sale.

You can uplift writers doing things for free without implying that professional writers are somehow making bank. I have to beg online for grocery money every couple of weeks.

And my trad pub friends aren't doing much better tbqh.

Like, I know I've been following the publishing industry since I was 14 years old & know more about it than the average joe, but I get so tired of people who think that being an author is some fantastic high-paying power career.

It doesn't pay FUCKALL. It sucks to try and live on. Do not do this for money. Is this not common knowledge?

Writing pays SHIT! Your favorite author is probably devastatingly poor! Yeah, tell your friends to buy their books, but also go pledge to the Patreon they probably have.
