“  i  don't  think  there's  any  such  thing.  ”  and  that's  the  honest  truth,  regardless  of  his  own  tendency  to  betray  his  cold  outer  shell  with  bouts  of  warmth  and  kindness.  in  shinjiro's  opinion,  if  someone  needs  to  be  bludgeoned  over  the  head  with  reality  to  get  it  through  their  thick  skull,  then  that's  just  the  way  it's  gotta  be.  he  respects  that  aotsuki  seems  to  share  in  this  mindset.  “  all  you  gotta  worry  about  is  dealin'  with  how  they  react.  i'm  sure  you  knew  that,  though,  right  ?  ”

at his unexpected request, her head cants to one side. pensive is the moue that now blooms 'pon puckered lips, accompanied by the faintest of hum. ❝ you know the crane game at game parade ? there is only one pyro jack plush left ... i sacrificed all my money to bring him home and guess what ?! he's still in there. ❞ an affront impossible to forgive, or forget. lithe shoulders slump downwards, as if burdened by the weight of her murmured confession. ❝ and since technically not all the money given in devoted sacrifice to the little traitor actually belonged to me, now i'm forced to do junpei's homework for the next three weeks. ❞

because  he  is  so  very  polite,  shinjiro  resists  the  urge  to  call  their  leader  a  dumbass  outright.  it's  probably  obvious  in  his  expression,  though,  that  he's  thinking  it.  in  all  honestly,  he's  never  quite  understood  the  appeal  of  spending  money  on  claw  machines.  save  that  same  money  and  you  can  buy  the  damn  plushie  yourself,  if  you  can  just  find  it.  even  if  you  can't,  waiting  is  better  than  giving  all  your  hard-earned  yen  up  to  a  rigged  machine,  right?

apparently  not,  according  to  kotone. 

“  wait  a  sec.  ”  shinjiro  will  neither  confirm  nor  deny  his  approval  of  taking  an  axe  to  said  rigged  machine,  but  he  has  a  better  question  anyway:  “  how  much  money  did  iori  lend  you  that  you're  doin'  his  homework  for  three  weeks  ?  ”

(  it's  so  easy  like  this  -  so  easy  when  it's  her.  the  darkness  of  the  night  is  so  swiftly  driven  away  by  that  smile.  shinji  can  bask,  just  a  little  longer,  in  the  fantasy  that  the  world  below  this  rooftop  is  not  as  cruel  as  he  knows  it  to  be.  )

they take it , of course. it was so wet & heavy . . . did he really plan on wearing this , had they ignored him on the street ? most men clung desperately to COMFORT without a moment's doubt. yet despite their generosity , he kept his distance . . . his shivering did not ESCAPE their notice. nor did his efforts to hide it.

if  shinjiro  has  learned  anything  in  his  life,  it's  that  it  doesn't  matter  what  it  seems  like.  he  can  be  trouble  even  if  it  seems  like  no  one  minds.  he  can  be  trouble  even  if  they  fail  to  realize  it.  resources  are  resources,  and  using  them  unnecessarily  is  trouble  whether  maledictus  wants  to  admit  that  or  not.

but  it's  fine.  shinji  said  he'd  stay  out  of  their  hair,  and  he  meant  it.  he's  smart  enough  to  spare  them,  even  if  they're  not  smart  enough  to  spare  themselves.

“  whatever.  ”  he  turns  towards  the  stairs.  “  stop  callin'  me  boy.  ”

that's  all  he  has  to  say  before  he's  off,  entirely  certain  that  he  won't  be  seeing  more  of  maledictus  tonight.  (  and  entirely  incorrect.  )

shinji's  eyes,  despite  being  half-lidded  and  blurry,  flicker  momentarily  to  the  edge  of  his  blanket.  he's  obviously  considering  just  pulling  it  over  his  head  and  ignoring  minako  until  she  (  maybe,  theoretically  )  goes  away.  it's  not  like  he's  in  any  position  to  force  her,  though,  if  she  decides  to  be  stubborn,  so  …  eventually,  he  sighs  (  wheezes  )  and  forces  himself  to  sit  up.

it's  sort  of  a  pathetic  display.  if  you  love  him,  you'll  avert  your  eyes.

“  …  ‘d  you  try  t’  make  it  from  scratch  ?  ”  his  voice  is  rough,  and  he  sniffs  loudly  as  soon  as  he's  done  talking.  his  nose  is  red,  too.  “  just  use  the  canned  stuff.  ”

If you're not tired why do you keep yawning?

the  silence  that  follows  can  very  clearly  be  interpreted  as  shinjiro's  tired  mind  trying  and  failing  to  come  up  with  a  witty  retort.  honestly,  he's  never  met  anyone  in  the  world  as  stubborn  as  minako,  and  that's  saying  something  when  you  grew  up  with  akihiko  fucking  sanada.  why  can't  she  just  go  ‘  okay  shinji,  i  believe  you  !  ’  and  then  carry  on  with  her  day  ?  why  does  she  have  to  give  a  shit  ?  it's  agonizing.  (  he  will  ignore  how  this  feeling  is  a  two-way  street.  he  will  ignore  his  own  hypocrisy.  )

it's  honest-to-god  several  minutes  -  several  sets  of  sixty-second  intervals  -  before  shinjiro's  brain  kicks  into  gear  and  gives  him  a  very  clever  and  coherent  answer:
