They had been wanting to get out of Waterfall for a while, to get some time to think. They needed that. Specially after finding out that Mettaton was their beloved Cousin, but... they found that out too late. It felt like a double loss when Mettaton died. Loss of an idol, the light of the underground, and of a cousin.

They just needed to get out for a while. To do something. Anything. So they decided to ride the rails. They bought a ticket, and sat down.

As they sat there, looking out the window and lost in thought, someone came into their cabin. They looked up and saw Sans come in. 

He was the one who was able to stop the killer. The one that was able to save the monsters, get the last human soul, and gave them some shimmer of hope in these dark times.

He turned invisible for a moment, too shy about the sudden encounter to say anything or do anything. As they he watched Sans, they noticed how sad he looked. He did not look how he thought a hero would look like. He wasn’t brimming with pride or happiness. He looked miserable, and he wanted to know why. So he turned visible and tried to gather to courage to do so.

So when Sans talked to him, it gave him a chance... though the topic that he brought up was not necessarily the one he hoped for.
