He should probably be angry. Anyone else would be. Abigail definitely will be, going off of the little he’s seen of her since Claire left. But he simply doesn’t have the strength for it. Between trying to maintain some semblance of normal for Violet, and keeping himself from wallowing in self-pity, he doesn’t have the energy to spare and it shows; dark circles ring his eyes, his hair is currently doing its best to defy gravity, and the shirt he’s wearing has peach puree and snot smeared across the shoulder.
So anger wasn’t in the cards tonight. But if she was looking for forgiveness, that wasn’t happening just because she caught him off-guard. Marion was used to being left behind, and Abigail may have more experience in that area than someone her age should, but every time he had to drag Violet away from the window, where she would wait for Claire every night, his heart just broke a little bit more. He’d trusted Claire, with his heart, and his life, and above all else, with his daughter. And though he knew logically there had to have been one hell of a reason for it, he wasn’t so willing to just give her a free pass and pretend nothing was wrong. Clearly, she still didn’t trust him. Not like he trusted her, at least.
“It’s late, Claire. Can we just, not do this tonight? Please.”
-- & Leaving her family had never been in the cards, until fate made that choice for her. Marion could protect himself, Abigail could protect herself but ultimately Claire was terrified they'd end up killed or that VIOLET would be taken. That thought was what made her leave, made her realize that if she didn't face the threat head on, there would always be that possibility of her family being torn apart. Yet, it seemed she had managed that on her own. "We have to." She counters gently. "If we don't --- it'll never be settled." The change in his apperance hasn't gone unnoticed, the ache to rectify it is strong. The offer of her lip is on the tip of her tongue, but she knows with her absence? He won't do it. He wouldn't trust her again that easily. "I know I was wrong to leave you, and my promises probably don't mean anything but you have to know that i DO love you, as I do Violet. That has and never will change."
