Beauty is terror
“Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it”
Secret History by Donna Tartt is the most interesting book I have ever read. It is the first big novel of Donna Tartt, written in 1992. Later, the book gained popularity, it became a the standard of the literature direction "Dark Academia".
The book is set in 1980's. Young man Richard wants to escape from his ugly and miserable life in Plano and goes to Hampden College in cold Vermont. There he becomes a part of the elite group that studies Greek separately from everyone else. But he will find out soon about their horrifying mysteries.
Even after discovering the secret in the very first page, Donna Tartt writes so consistently, leaving hints among the pages, that you can feel enigma and understatement in the air, waiting the ticking bomb to explode. She is truly a master of the word, her voice tells the story so romantically, that every episode you see looks like a masterpiece to you. However, some people might actually find book boring sometimes, because it has big descriptions of moments when nothing happens. Also it has a lot of references to ancient literature, classics, so it could be difficult for someone to understand the author fully.
I recommend 'the Secret History' to everyone who wants be thrilled and enchanted at the same time by the book they read. When I finished reading, I could not believe that I will not come back to it tomorrow.
(p.s. ts is actually my english homework but I think it's good lmao)
