(hey folks - getting dinged for activity twice in a row tells me i Probably shouldn't come back for a hot minute. i will absolutely continue any current threads then, but consider this a hiatus until either i catch up on schoolwork or the beginning of may, whichever comes first)
dog to dog communication @blowyourhousedown
♠ He felt most comfortable in the cover of night, when there was nothing but the streetlights illuminating the city, and the absence of people and traffic made the world slow down for a moment. His stroll was done out of habit more than anything else, wandering aimlessly in this unfamiliar place – at least by his side, he had his familiar companion. The black jackal, unfortunately now shrunken down to the size of a common dog, trotted casually beside him, curiously mustering his surroundings, clearly more awestruck and fascinated by everything around him than the detective. In a way Spirale wasn’t that different to what he was used to, except for the fact that it felt calmer, more quiet in a way.
And there appeared to be little people around, no bustling nightlife that made the night feel like day, no crowded streets that made one suffocate, and no imminent danger from all sides. That did not make him less cautious, of course.
So, when he saw a figure in the distance, his hand immediately darted to his holster, even if the gun in it would pose little danger to whoever was there. But while Noir was on high-alert, gritting his teeth as he was ready for the worst, Anubis’ ears perked upwards, glowing eyes following the silhouette in front of them. And shortly after his tail started…to wag? An unusual reaction to danger, the detective thought, but he knew his partner well enough to trust his instincts, even if he himself thought it to be foolish.
But the jackal seemed to be considering the stranger as a friend, looking up to his companion as a way to reassure him, well knowing that the man did not share his open-minded trust. And then he started to slowly walk towards the stranger, tail hanging low and swaying playfully from side to side as he approached him. Anubis may have trusted him naively, but Noir did not.
”What business does someone like you have wandering these streets alone at night?" He growled, the irony clearly missing him.
Spirale is different in many ways to both the bad old days and the complicated middle period: unless he slips his skin, people don't pale at the sight of him, here, don't react with fear or anger or suspicion at his (deserved) reputation alone. So it's almost refreshingly mundane (heh) to meet a hostile figure, to see a weapon pointed at him and realize that it's out of nothing more than a natural paranoia.
He'll admit to being little impressed, too, even somehow bizarrely pleased by the gesture even as it sets off the echo of an old, tired ache. People around here don't listen to their instincts enough.
Still, he doesn't actually mean any harm, his capabilities for inflicting it aside, and much as that gun looks like a standard-issue newcomer's BB in the reflected glare of the streetlight, a pellet to the eye would probably still hurt like no one's business. Especially if someone's thought to start making them in silver.
Deescalation, then. Bigby raises his hands, slowly but with an affected casual air. "Ignoring 'someone like you' for a minute, I could say the same thing about y -"
The shadowy shape that has been slowly approaching - that Bigby had noticed and dismissed as typical inexplicable Spirale canine behaviour - crosses some invisible line.
Its scent hits.
Bigby goes rigid.
Heat, near-scorching, long-cooled. The eerie, anticipatory near-silence of night in the desert. Something wild, yes, but patient and waiting, unhurried, content not to hunt but simply to watch its prey's slow, inexorable march towards its open maw. Papyrus, and ink, and a sharp tang of brass and lifesblood. The stale, dusty scent of bones in an old, cold tomb.
And something looming - something scorching - something indescribable - something he can never forget, no matter how far he runs.
"Which one are you," snarls the spawn of the North Wind at the god in his midst. (Some part of him already knows.)

Was this guy bad news? Robert knew better than to judge based on first impressions, but he had a pretty serious expression on despite presumably enjoying a meal at a table alone a bar. Well, he probably would have been, but Robert had a feeling he'd ended up with the wrong meal. "This yours?"
He approached the table and casually slid a plate in front of the man. It wasn't what he'd ordered, but he'd overheard this guy ordering that exact dish earlier.
"Little mix-up, I think. It happens. I'm assuming you'd like to eat what you ordered, anyways."
Damn, this definitely wasn't Bigby's order. Trust it to come while he was in the can and unable to correct the server about it. He stared down at it, weighing whether he should bother flagging someone down to correct it or just give up and eat the thing - food was food, after all.
In the end, the decision was made for him; the correct order appeared on his table, thanks to a man who - if Bigby was reading him right - smelled vaguely wary and looked almost as tired as Bigby felt. Huh.
"Thanks," he answered, pushing what was presumably the man's own plate towards him in return. The wariness was a bit of a surprise, if far from unwarranted - maybe he'd become more used to people's complete underestimation of the danger he posed than he'd realized. The notch of missing flesh on the man's ear probably indicated he'd seen enough shit to be decently on guard, for once.
Unfortunately for the guy who'd ended up with Bigby's "two burgers (no fries)" - and for Bigby's everyday nemesis, the headache - the place was filled up; every table was taken, and knowingly or not, he'd sacrificed his barstool by getting up to swap back their orders.
"You can sit there, if you want. S'packed tonight." Not normally something Bigby would offer, but hey, the guy had martyred himself on the sword of seat-losing to fix the bar's mix-up. It was the least he could do in return.
i should icon that bit in the dispatch trailer that has a stick figure drawing of bigby in it
bigby holding a dangling kay by the back of her shirt: is anyone responsible for this
@spiderstaff
Hm.
It's a small noise, small enough that someone with a human's hearing would probably have missed it. Bigby might have missed it, if this alleyway weren't so quiet, or he hadn't been on patrol - hadn't had all his senses focused on his immediate environment.
The thing is, though, he does hear it. More to the point, he can identify what it means, and where it's coming from - a quick, muffled shuffle-slide of something against metal isn't too hard to connect to the dumpster at the alley's other end.
Someone - or something - is inside. And not making much noise, which means unconsciousness, serious weakness, or an attempt - and a skilled one - to be quiet.
Bigby approaches it slowly, considering his angle of approach both literally and otherwise. If this is an animal, or someone weakened or unconscious, they might be trapped; on the other hand, if it's a deliberate dumpster-dive, he doesn't want to spook the "culprit" into running. Honestly, he'd leave well enough alone if it wasn't for the possible implications: people (or animals) who end up in dumpsters aren't generally having the best time of things.
He considers, and then discards, several plans - opening the lid outright, at least without warning, seems high on the spooking risk no matter how slowly he does it. After a moment of thought, he stops a step away - not blocking all angles of escape, but close enough to intervene quickly if need be.
"Hey," Bigby says, clearly but levelly. "If you can hear me in there, I'm gonna need either a verbal response or two knocks for confirmation that you're okay. If you don't, I'm gonna assume you need help and open this dumpster up."

A last, brutal blow sends his enemy sprawling: pathetic, now, beaten and bruised, too winded to call any more magic to sting with. He wheezes, trying to lever himself up with the hand that isn't holding a broken nose; a clawed hand stops that in its tracks, grabs him roughly by the hair and hoists him up with a snarl.
Pathetic. He'd thought himself so powerful before, pushing around prey who couldn't fight back. Now he stinks of piss and sour fear, trembling in the grip of a predator much higher on the food chain than he will ever be.
Words take a moment, come out guttural, growled.
"Don't. Pull this shit. Again."
The gasping response - high-pitched pleas, squealed promises - only irritates further. The man is dropped with a thud and a last, growled "Go" - luckily for him, he goes.
The beast left behind growls, punches the wall once out of leftover frustration. There's no satisfaction in restraint; he wants to chase the man down, to rip, to tear, to really show him what his targets felt....
Fingers fumble in a shirt pocket, practiced movements only slightly hindered by the presence of claws.
Breathe in. Out.
A click of a lighter: the stench of tobacco.
In.
Out.
Slowly, carefully, Bigby stuffs himself back down into the guise of humanity.
"You have two chances before I decide how many chances I'm gonna give you...and then it's three strikes...until I decide whether or not I'm gonna stand up for myself."
"You could stand to skip some steps there, kid. Sounds like a recipe for getting walked all over if you don't."
don't think i'll be participating in the rerun, so slides out a non-event starter call

The worst part of these gaps is that he never remembers "leaving".
Some people have described "going back": having new experiences, forming new memories in their "home", wherever that might be. There's no such clear demarcation for Bigby, not now or the other times it's happened. Just a fuzzing at the edges of his biographical memory, like trying to recall what happened just before sleep - and a sudden snap back to awareness, with an uneasy sense that time (too much time) has passed.
It feels too much like waking up from unconsciousness for comfort; Bigby already has his back against a wall before the full situation registers, is already pushing down a growl of paranoia before it gets loose. Supposedly - no matter how much it feels otherwise - he's been gone for all the time he's missing, not vulnerable.
That last is liable to change, though, if Bigby doesn't get himself up to date with what's changed in his absence - and soon.
His hand finds his shirt pocket, flicks out a cigarette with the ease of muscle memory.
No better way to reacclimate himself than walking the streets for a while.
