Les Paul created his early solid-body electric guitar from a 4 x 4 piece of lumber.

He nicknamed his guitar, "The Log."

After solving the feedback issues of acoustic electric guitars, he attached the hollow body of an old guitar to the sides of the 4x4 to make it look more like a traditional instrument.

This prototype was the precursor to the Gibson Les Paul guitar and is a foundational invention for modern electric guitars.
