A set of Meezan Scripture stones were found scattered around this tomb of which one has made its way to the London City Museum.

Also known as the Moon Step Stone, this is a compulsory feature at the entrance of every Buddhist religious buildings from ancient times. This semi circular moon step stone consists of 6 separate sections of patterns of which the meanings are highly debated. Singing Fish on the Radio

Almost a decade after I stepped back into this very same town just 6 hours away from Colombo and what a change of façade I noticed. It was not only brimming with colour and culture but was actually showing off why Batticaloa was a chosen capital of the colonialists all those centuries ago.

It was easy to enjoy this little tongue of land that’s surrounded in its lagoon next to the Indian Ocean. The Sirens of the ocean the sailors forever fear comes to life in Batticaloa. Not as a thing of fear but as a reality among the “Singing Fish”. Yes there is such a thing as Singing Fish in Batti; in fact a Catholic priest named Father Lang recorded this musical charm and broadcasted it in the 1960s over the local wireless.

Batti is also the port to which the old Sinhalese idiom that says “Like trading Ginger for Chillie” (translation) comes from. Since the Sri Lankan Monarchy was suffering at the hands of Portugese Colonialists, they actually invited Dutch to help us fight the Portugese away via the Port of Batticaloa, which turned out to be worse than the previous colonialists.

It’s almost a little alienated land of culinary resources and produce with its Lagoon Crabs, Tiger Prawns and Mango Arrack. Definitely a refreshing change from that dream like past I used to know Batti from.

It is one of the must see places in Sri Lanka.

The Magical Land of Serendib

TRAVEL, a word that resonates the thrill of going someplace new, adventure and even to some the idea of serene relaxation. To me it is a passion; a discovery of myself.

This beautiful island I was blessed to be born in (yes, I’m an island girl!) is recorded in the oldest of tales as the destination the wayfarers chose, this little pearl hidden away in the Indian Ocean. As a little girl when my grandmother was telling me stories of Sinbad the sailor who came to the magical land of Serendib, Sri Lanka in my heart has held the feeling of awe.

No matter where in the world I had travelled and many a culture and faces I’ve seen, the tranquility I find here at home is unsurpassed by any worth.

My mother has taught to me that it is only nice to share. Hence I will tell you of my little adventures and things that I discover as I travel around my island paradise so you know why you should visit Sri Lanka.

“What about Whale Watching? “

When I returned after nearly a decade of living overseas, I realised there was so much I didn’t know or missed out on that I was suddenly hit by this sense of urgency to catch up. I had no idea where I could start as surprisingly for only 65,000 km² area, Sri Lanka has much to see and do enough for a lifetime.

Then came along a mate of mine and said to me “What about whale watching?” I was dumb stricken.

There’s whales in Sri Lanka?

was the first thought that popped to my mind. Well it’s true, Whale watching in Sri Lanka has caught on in recent times as a popular tourist attraction. What’s more there’s dolphin watching too. Well that I will save for another day.

Along the Southern Coast from Mirissa up to the Northern shores of Trincomalee there are a several spots to spot these lazy but beautiful giants of the sea. It is reported that the whale inhabitancy in Sri Lanka is the largest found in one location in the whole world. Also unlike rest of the world The Blue Whale Colony in Sri Lanka does not migrate quite amazingly.

The season of whale watching peaks generally From December till April and if I can give you a tip on your ride to see them, Do hold on to your Sea Legs as you sure are going to need them.
