it was only slightly ironic that rowan had approached her holding the empty box in his hands when she’d been pacing in the kitchen holding the actual test and trying to figure out what to tell him. she’d hid her hands behind her back the moment she heard his voice, but soon relaxed when she realized the talk was going to happen now. “uh…y-yeah, i did…” she told him, holding out the little pink test with a plus sign on it. “i’m– we’re gonna have a baby.”

He had to have been dreaming, clearly, because THIS couldn’t be happening. “n-no, we... h-how, um...” he shook his head in an attempt to find the words -- or, at least in an attempt to find SOME words. “w-we can’t,” he finally said quietly, the words coming out as more of a trainwreck than a complete thought. “we can’t have a baby. we CAN’T have a baby, shasta.”

“just a few simple questions, you know the drill.” one hand moved to cup his cheek, pulling up a chair to sit in front of him. “the sooner we can get this done, the sooner we can go home, yeah?” she took his battered and swollen hands in her own, kissing his knuckles. “come on. just a quick shower. you look like a mess,” she added, just to tease him, and a small smirk was on her lips to show it.

“Yeah,” he mumbled, the jolt of pain he felt from her touching his hands enough to wake him up a bit more. “i just -- i need to, um... sit. i can’t-can’t go out like this, um...” he looked up at her a bit sadly for a moment and then... things kind of faded to black from there. he slumped over onto the bench -- onto a few of the clean towels he hadn’t used to clean his face up a little. he came to after about a minute and blinked up at her. “did i win?”

“Hey, so um...” rowan wasn’t sure how to approach the topic -- really, he wasn’t sure how the topic had come to NEED to be approached in the first place. they’d always been safe, ever since they’d started dating and even when they moved in together a year later, so he was sort of at a loss. “i-i found this,” he said softly, holding up the small, pink, EMPTY cardboard box with P R E G N A N C Y  T E S T in large purple letters on the top from the bathroom trash. “did you... like -- you-you took it?”

This has been on my mind for long but I’m gonna do this - please reblog this if you’re comfortable with pre-establishing relationships. I do not mean “met at the grocery store two weeks ago” or “have a common friend”, but rather stuff like “have been best friends since kindergrden”, “go for a beer every friday”, “friends with benefits”, “dated in highschool”, “hate each other’s guts because -insert reason-”  etc. Something meaningful (but not necessarily shippy) and I mean with muns/characters you have not interacted with, because I cannot believe I am the only one who prefers jumping right into the heart of the human interaction
