A few minutes after the Titanic was underway, she passed the Oceanic and the New York, who were moored beside each other. The Titanic's displacement caused the New York's mooring cables to snap, pulling the New York towards the Titanic. Captain Smith ordered that the Titanic's engines be put “full astern”, while the tug Vulcan took the New York under control, narrowly avoiding a collision between the two ships by only 4 feet. This delayed the Titanic by about 1 hour, before she left for Cherbourg.
