These are some shots of my previous environment that I ended up scrapping for my redesigned one but i thought it would be worth posting so you could still see what I was doing. I decided to scrap this idea, mainly because it was really unclear what was actually happening, and was too complex an idea to have someone work out on their own which was one of the main focuses of my brief so it was for the best.

This was a material I made from scratch but didn't end up using in ritual environment, it was made to show where people had been performing the ritual. I made an alpha layer of some feet prints in Photoshop to begin with and added the necessary variations for the feet prints there creating small pathways where people had gone and subtle changes in the mud too. Then in Zbrush I created a mud like texture and added the alpha over the top and then worked into it a little more to just refine the map. I had a metallic, normal and 2 colour/diffuse maps just to get it exactly how i wanted in unreal. I then added a base colour with a Fresnel on the emissive colour to add in a more satisfying glow to the texture and emulate the sun better and give it its final result.

Salek is the name of the demon that this hand belonged too, he used his 7 hands to command the 7 armies of hell. His hand can be seen sucking the life from a sacred tree from my honours project. I excagerated the pointiness of the nails to seem sharp and wanted it to be caked in dry and wet blood to push the idea this thing lives and breathes death, which is why is seems unfazed by taking these countless sould. I think the finger and thumb could have used some more work and i wanted to add in more veins which is didnt quite have time to add in by the end but am still pleased with the result as it reflects the idea i had in mind. I made the some of the dirt and messyness in the texture alittle too intense but this is because its mostly seen from a distance and so it made more sense in the scene. - Salek's Hand - Download Free 3D model by Bob Roberts (@Bobroberts97)

This is my Demons hand i made for my honours project, i made it with the intention of pushing the idea of fear as much possible as it was supposed to represent evil in the scene in contrast to the souls coming from the tree.

This is my Robot from my City environment, I wanted it to seem like some-kind of government serviced policing robot, that had crashed, these things would ordinarily be floating around quite often in this world and so shouldn’t seem inertly threatening, or very strong, but in numbers would swarm and become a nuisance. I thought it would be interesting to have “feed us” scratched into the broken down robot as if some hungry people had vandalised it which makes it into more of a story driving piece. I have also shown a different textured version to give you an idea of how these robots might be used throughout this world in different places, the tools on the arm could always change of course to suit its specific needs.

This was the final version of the puddle material that i made, in the end i decided on having two types of puddle in my one material allowing me to get more variation across my ground. The ground texture on its own i made from one 4k concrete texture consisting of 3 different black and white masks on the rbg channels which i made in Photoshop. Which was then combined with another rock texture that gives it more colour, that combined with calibrating the planar reflection properly in unreal can yield some really good results.

This is my photogrametry of some rubbish I did to go on my ground in my sci-fi environment. The result was a little messy but I didn’t mind too much in this case. As i thought, as they would be piling up, it would make sense to have gaps in the mesh as it allows for more variation anyway when they’re clustered together. It worked to my advantage pretty well in this case too as it meant i had a pretty decent asset, out of some pretty fun experimentation. I think ill definetly do this again but probably on more organic things like tree barks and rocks.

These are a bunch of environment drawings that I had done in the past, I try to work quickly to capture as often i will lose what it is I’m trying to capture like some nice lighting. Most of the pencil ones took around 10 min to an hour and were all done outdoors in various places. They’re made to capture the idea of the place not capturing them in detail, but have tried to push the shape language in places to take more away from the studies.

These are some digital paintings i did when trying to draw out environments in Photoshop. But as they never turned out that great i decided not to continue sketching in this way, as i actually really enjoy sketching in pencil and so if i ever need to express my ideas, id just do it on paper. But they were still pretty good experimentation and taught me some good design aspects.

This was a quick one day sculpt I did just to show how I can create complex things quickly if necessary, I made this with the intention of being some-kind of evil looking gargoyle type thing and gave it human like anatomy built around a frogs body, but then part way through the sculpt I decided to make it so it basically was a deformed person with a dunce hat as it pushed the dark vibe I was going for in a better more interesting way. I like to imagine this creature being the slave for an evil god of some kind and he has to wear the hat to please it. I rendered it in a few different materials just so you could get a better idea of what it would look like, I never intended on bringing this into unreal or anything so I’m not going to take it any further but it was fun idea to sculpt.

These are some different variations of a substance texture i made with different black and white maps, i used this for my pavement texture in my sci-fi scene. As i could use alphas to make different variations inside substance and so thought it would be good to show a few examples, hope you like them.

Water Shaders and Testing in Unreal

After a few weeks of trial and error i finally achieved a nice water shader in unreal for my city street project although the body of water will used in my forest environment, Its currently in a merged testing area, where I’ve set up some nice lighting and other effects such as the fireflies you can see floating around and the ones in the distance which emit actual lights. The top image was the water i was most happy with but i added in a few of my other variations to show how i got there. The second image actually is a much more complicated shader that has more colour variation but looks less realistic than the top one and also way more demanding on your computer. The third image was made from the unreal starter assets and the fourth image was a shot at ocean water which takes more advantage of unreal subsurface scattering which turned out pretty cool. Then the Final image was just a beauty shot showing off a the effects i had put together, there is also a simple day and night cycle i added in that has the light source and sky-sphere orbiting in unison using the level blueprint.
